We’ve been working our way through the book of Galatians:
* The essence of true Christian faith is belief – belief in God and belief that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who died an atoning death and resurrected from death to new life.

We who are in Christ, are no longer slaves to a religious system or obsolete spiritual laws, but rather are now family – and can enjoy the freedom that comes from being in Christ.

This week as we look at Galatians 5 – we look further at this “freedom that comes from being in Christ”. What does it mean to be truly free? [Open Question (- death?)]

Let’s first look at some famous quotes on the topic of freedom (and there are many):
“Freedom, oh freedom, that’s just some people talking. Your prison is walking through this world all alone.” The Eagles, Desperado.
Freedom means you are unobstructed in living your life as you choose. Anything less is a form of slavery. Wayne Dyer (U.S. self-help guru)
Is freedom anything else than the right to live as we wish? Nothing else.

There are two types of freedom:
Physical freedom – freedom from physical oppression
身体的な自由－身体的な抑圧からの自由
Spiritual freedom – freedom from spiritual bondage
霊的な自由－霊的な束縛からの自由
Both are important. Both should be championed and sought after.
But spiritual freedom is greater. And spiritual freedom is more elusive.
霊的な自由の方がよりすばらしいのです。
It’s possible to be physically ‘imprisoned’ in a jail, in a hostile workplace, in an abusive relationship, by illness, by persecution and hatred; yet still have the greater (spiritual) freedom. Many of Paul’s letters are demonstrations of this.
In his letter to the Galatians, Paul talks about spiritual slavery and spiritual freedom. (We talked about this last week.)

Galatians 5
1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
4 You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.
6 …The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.
自由を得させるために、キリストはわたしたちを解放して下さったのである。だから、堅く立って、二度と奴隷のくびきにつながれてはならない。
4 律法によって義とされようとするあなたがたは、キリストから離れてしまっている。恵みから落ちている。
6 キリスト・イエスにあっては、割礼があってもなくても、問題ではない。尊いのは、愛によって働く信仰だけである。
There are churches and I’ve met Christians who believe that the only way to please God and be justified is to live according to the whole law (old and new testament). They’ve gone back to the old, obsolete religious system that Jesus died to replace. In so doing they have actually “alienated themselves from Christ and fallen away from grace”.
We no longer have to worry about satisfying all the little religious rules and observing all the special days and traditions and ways of the Jews of old, or even many of the traditions that the Christian churches have erected over the centuries either.
私たちはもう昔のユダヤ人のやり方、キリスト教会が何世紀にもわたって立ててきた伝統の多くを守ろうと心配する必要はないのです。
6 …The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.
尊いのは、愛によって働く信仰だけである。
This is a pivotal verse but be very careful of it without context. Without a clear definition of faith and a clear understanding of love, it can be misunderstood and can lead to unholy indulgences. So Paul continues…
これは極めて重要な節ですが、誤解されやすく、汚れて意のままにへとつながることがあるのです。
13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’
16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
13 兄弟たちよ。あなたがたが召されたのは、実に、自由を得るためである。ただ、その自由を、肉の働く機会としないで、愛をもって互に仕えなさい。
14 律法の全体は、「自分を愛するように、あなたの隣り人を愛せよ」というこの一句に尽きるからである。

We can divide the acts of the flesh here into three groups:
sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery – sexual sins 性的な罪
不品行、汚れ、好色、
idolatry and witchcraft – sins against God 神に対する罪
偶像礼拝、まじない
hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy – sins against others and are related to the legalism that Paul has been condemning, and 人に対する罪
敵意、争い、そねみ、怒り、党派心、分裂、分派、 ねたみ
drunkenness, orgies, and the like – others. This is not a complete list.
泥酔、宴楽、および
Paul says the acts of the flesh are “obvious”. It’s a tragic sign of the times when sins like sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery are no longer obvious. People will have very different standards on the matter or simply not know what they mean.
不品行、汚れ、好色などの罪が明白でないというのは、その時代の悲惨なしるしです。
It’s also interesting that the deeds of the sinful nature are called ‘acts’ or ‘works’ – in the plural. The fruit of the Spirit is in the singular (not just for English usage) suggesting that the fruit of the Spirit is unified; they come as a composite whole, not as individual items to pick and choose.
御霊の実は一つにまとまっています；各実が集まり一つの全体となっており、好きなものが選べる個々の実ではないのです。
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

23 柔和、自制であって、これらを否定する律法はない。

The fruit of the Spirit can also be seen in three sets.
1. Love, joy, peace – these identify us as having the Spirit of God.
愛、喜び、平和 私たちに神の霊があることを明らかにする
2. patience, kindness, goodness – these reflect how Spirit-led people will conduct personal relationships. 御霊に導かれた人々がどのように人間関係を築くかを反映する
寛容、慈愛、善意
3. faithfulness, gentleness and self-control – these focus on the inner life of a person under the control of the Holy Spirit. 聖霊の支配を受けている者の内面に焦点を当てる
忠実、柔和、自制
Freedom in Christ is closely associated with the fruit of the Spirit. There’s no law against the fruit of the Spirit. We are to produce and share the fruit of the Spirit freely.
キリストにある自由は御霊の実と密接に結びついています。
私たちは御霊の実を結び、惜しみなく分かち合うべきなのです。
What is one thing we can notice about the fruit of the Spirit? (Look at them again)
-> The fruit of the Spirit is primarily for service not for self. It has personal benefits and purposes, too, but the fruit of the Spirit is primarily outward-focussing. It is to reflect to and share with others the nature and kindnesses of God.
御霊の実は主に自分自身のためでなく奉仕のためにあります。
神のご性質と優しさを反映し、人と分かち合うためのものです。
This is so we can fulfil the command which sums up the entire law ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’.
So just as the gifts of the Spirit are given for the common good, so the fruit of the Spirit and our freedom in Christ is given primarily for service to others.
The acts of the sinful nature are associated with selfishness. (Look at them – they all have to do with gratifying the self.) (Selfishness both leads to the acts of the sinful nature and results from them.)
御霊の賜物が公益のために与えられているように、御霊の実とキリストにある自由は、主に人に奉仕するために与えられているのです。罪深い性質の行いは、自己中心と結びついています。
But the fruit of the Spirit is associated with love toward others. (It both results from the Spirit and leads back to the Spirit.)
しかし御霊の実は他人への愛と結びついています。
This should make us a ‘go and do good’ church, not just a ‘come and see’ church.
So this freedom in Christ that we have been given is:
Freedom from our old sinful nature (which is selfish) and,
Freedom to serve others as new creations in Christ.
ですから、私たちに与えられたキリストにある自由は：
私たちの古い罪深い性質（自己中心）からの自由と
キリストにあって新しく造られた者として人に仕えることへの自由です。
There is a misconception in the world that sin is fun and without negative consequences, and that service to others is tiresome and boring and with few positive personal consequences.
Nothing could be further from the truth and this is what we will discover next time.
I want to encourage and challenge you today. If you don’t feel you understand or have experienced what it means to truly be free – to have been set free in Christ – don’t go today without talking to me or one of the others leaders about it. Freedom in Christ is something for you to know and experience today.
今日、私はみなさんを励まし、やってみてほしいことがあります。もし本当に自由になること－キリストにあって自由にされることの意味が分からない、経験したことがないと感じるなら、私や他のリーダーの方たちにそのことを話さずに帰らないでください。キリストにある自由は、今日あなたに知ってもらいたい、経験してもらいたいものなのです。
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:36
だから、もし子があなたがたに自由を得させるならば、あなたがたは、ほんとうに自由な者となるのである。ヨハネによる福音書8:36
