Today is the first Sunday in Advent. 今日は降臨節の最初の日曜日です。
There are four Sundays in Advent and today is the first of them.
降臨節の間に４回日曜日がありますが今日はそのうちの最初の日曜日です。
The word ‘Advent’ means ‘coming’ or ‘arrival’ and refers to the first coming of Jesus as a baby.
アドベントという言葉は’来るべき’、又は‘到来’という意味で、イエスが赤ちゃんとなって初めて来られたことをいいます。
We Christians use the Advent season as a special time to prepare our hearts for the coming Christ.
私たちクリスチャンはこの降臨節の間を、キリストを迎える準備期間として過ごします。
Sounds good. But how exactly do we do that?
素晴らしいことですね。でも、実際はどのように準備をするのでしょうか？
Paul tells us in his letter to the Romans:
パウロはローマ人への手紙の中でこのように言っています：
The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.
Romans 13:11-14
なお、あなたがたは時を知っているのだから、特に、この事を励まねばならない。すなわち、あなたがたの眠りからさめるべき時が、すでにきている。なぜなら今は、わたしたちの救が、初め信じた時よりも、もっと近づいているからである。
12 夜はふけ、日が近づいている。それだから、わたしたちは、やみのわざを捨てて、光の武具を着けようではないか。

The Time is Now 今がその時
Before a big rugby game. Getting dressed.
ラグビーの大きな試合の前に、試合着を着用します。
Putting boots on. Taping up.
ブーツを履きます。テープを巻きます。
The smell of heat gel. 筋肉の塗り薬の匂いがします。
The sound of metal spikes on concrete flooring. Stretching.
コンクリートの床に響く金属スパイクの音。準備運動。
Getting your mind ready.
心の準備をします。
Ref comes into the dressing room and says “It’s time”.
審判が着替え室に入ってきて「始まるぞ。」と言います。
Right then, preparation time, waiting time is over.
それで、もう準備は終わりです。待ち時間は終了しました。
It’s time to get in the game. And you run out onto the field.
試合が始まります。あなたは、試合場に走っていきます。
When writing to the Romans here, Paul doesn’t say the hour is coming or the hour is soon.
パウロがローマの人々へ手紙を書いていた時は、その時がきたとか、その時がもうすぐくるというようには言いませんでした。
He says the hour “has already come”.
パウロはその時が「もうすでにきている」と言っています。
It’s time. It’s time to ‘get in the game’.
そうです。その時です。「試合が始まる時」です。
Don’t put off fully submitting to God until you’ve finished your paper, or finished a project, or your kids start school, or your kids finish school or anything like that.
あなたがこの書類を書き終えるまでとか、あることをやり遂げてからとか、子供が学校に入学するまでとか、あるいは子供が学校を卒業してからとか、いうような理由で神様に完全に身を委ねることを後回しにしないでください。
The time to wake up and get right with God has already come.
目を覚まし、神と正しい関係をもつ時はすでに来たのです。
The reason for this, Paul writes is that “our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed”.
その理由はパウロが「わたしたちの救が、もっと近づいているからである」と、このように書いています。
What Paul means by this is that the return of Christ, and with that the full realisation of our salvation, is very near.
パウロはここで、キリストが戻ってきたこと、私たちの救済が近づいていることが、確かにわかると言っているのです。
This reminds me of Jesus’ parable of the ten bridesmaids.
私はここで、イエスの１０人の花嫁の付添人のたとえ話を思い出します。
Five were ready with enough oil to last through the night.
１０人のうち５人は夜通し過ごす為に十分な香油を用意していました。
The other five weren’t ready and they missed the bridegroom’s arrival.
しかし、あとの５人は十分な香油を準備しておらず、花婿を迎えることができませんでした。
They weren’t allowed into the feast. They were shut out.
その準備のできていなかった５人は宴会に参加することができなかったのです。彼女たちは宴会場から締め出されてしまいました。
Their sin was not a matter of idolatry or drunkenness or sexual immorality or dissension.
彼女たちの罪は偶像礼拝でもないし、お酒を飲んで泥酔したわけでもないし、性的不道徳や不和を働いたわけでもありませんでした。
They simply weren’t ready.
彼女たちは実に単純に準備ができていなかったのです。
The time to wake up and get right with God has already come.
目を覚まし、神と正しい関係をもつ時はすでに来たのです。
Today is the day to get your hearts ready for Christ.
今日は私たちの心をキリストのために準備する日です。
But what exactly do we do – in practical terms – to get our hearts ready for Christ?
しかし、では実際のところ、キリストのために、どのように私たちの気持ちを準備したら良いのでしょうか？
2. Behave Decently つつましく歩む
Paul is specific about this.
パウロは「慎ましく歩む」ということに関して詳しく書いています。
He lists six specific areas that we need to get right in our lives.
パウロは、私たちの人生のうち、特に6つの分野を取り上げています。
Six areas to “wake up from” and to “put aside”. (These come in three pairs.)
その6つの分野とは「眠りからさめる」と「捨てる」ということに焦点をあてています。
Carousing and Drunkenness. 宴楽と泥酔
Carousing means “to engage in a drunken revel” or “to drink deeply and frequently”.
「宴楽」とは「酔っ払うまで飲む」か「よく深酔いする」ということを意味します。
Drunkenness means “to be affected by alcohol to the extent of losing control of your behaviour”.
「泥酔」するということは「行動を支配され理性を失うほどアルコールに悪影響される」ということを意味します。
This is how the people of the world celebrate and I dare say for most it’s the only way they know how to celebrate.
酒を飲んで酔っぱらうこと、それがこの世の人々の祝福の仕方だと言えると思います。そして、あえて私は言いますが、それがこの世の人々の唯一の祝福の方法だと言えると思います。
Have an alcohol-free party outside the church and see how many people turn up.
考えてみてください。お酒を出さないパーティーを提案してみてください。一体何人の人たちが集まると思いますか？
We need to be sober minded.
私たちは酔いからさめていなければいけません。
“Come out from them and be separate.” 彼らの間から出て行き “Do not be filled with wine but be filled with the Holy Spirit”. 酒に酔ってはいけない。それは乱行のもとである。むしろ御霊に満たされて
That is how we get ready. このようにして私たちは準備をするのです。
Sexual immorality and Debauchery. 淫乱と好色
To be clear, sexual immorality includes fornication (sex before marriage), adultery (sex between a married person and a person who is not their spouse), homosexual behaviour and other forms of sex outside the marriage union.
はっきり言っておきましょう。性的不道徳とは、姦淫、または婚前交渉をも含みます。不貞、いわゆる不倫、一方が既婚者で他者が未婚の場合も含みます。同性愛的な行動や結婚以外のあらゆる性的な行為全てを含みます。
I specify these because there is so much exposure to these things and so much normalisation of them in society and in the media and today even in the church, that we have simply come to accept them.
私はここで特にこれらの関係を話しておきたいと思います。なぜならこんにち、私たちの社会、情報社会にはたくさんの性的な露出、正常でないことが起こっていて、教会の中でさえ、これらのことが受け入れられつつあるからです。
But these are not quaint teachings from yesteryear.
しかしこれらのことは昔の古風な教えというわけではありません。
This is the unchanging word of God.
これは不変の変わらぬ神の言葉です。
The sexual immorality that Paul was writing about was rampant 2000 years ago.
パウロが書いている性的な不義とは２０００年も前にすでに横行していました。
So don’t be fooled. It’s not a modern thing.
ですから、皆さん騙されないでください。このような不貞は今日だけの出来事ではありません。
It’s not a cultural matter. It’s a matter of righteousness.
文化でもありません。正しい義、正義のことです。
If you don’t believe that, you are not ready for Christ.
もしあなたがそのことを信じないのであれば、あなたはまだキリストを迎える用意ができていません。
You need to wake up. あなたは、眠りから覚めなければなりません。
We must be pure.私たちは清くなければなりません。
“Come out from them and be separate.” 「彼らの間から出て行き」という言葉を覚えましょう。
Dissension and jealousy. 争いとねたみ [Japanese please Emiko]
Dissension is “disagreement that leads to discord”. 意見の衝突、口論とは「不仲を招く意見の違い」ということですが、
It’s dissension and jealousy that causes divisions in relationships and in the church.
意見の衝突や妬みが、教会のうちの人間関係に分裂を生みます。
I want to commend you, church, because we have so little of these issues and so much love in our church.
ここで私はあなた方を褒めたいと思います。なぜならこの私たちの教会が抱えている問題はほんの少しかなく、しかしたくさんの愛を感じます。
But let’s heed the warning here and be vigilant to not let these things creep into our fellowship.
しかし意見の衝突や妬みが、いつのまにか私たちの賛美に入り込まないように、用心深く注意し留意しておきましょう。
At Christmas time when emotions are high, when we’re seeking and using spiritual gifts, exploring our roles in the church, these things can creep in if we’re not careful.
霊的な賜物を求めたり使ったり、また教会の中での私たちの役割を考えたりと、クリスマスの時期には感情が高ぶります。そんな時も、用心していなければ、意見の衝突や妬みが、いつの間にか私たちに忍び寄ってきます。
We need to be always loving.
私たちはいつも愛情深くなくてはなりません。
“Come out from them and be separate.” 「彼らの間から出て行き」ということを覚えましょう。
3. Clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ.
主イエス・キリストを着なさい。
This is the climax of Paul’s teaching here.
パウロの教えの最大の重要点はここにあります。
I want to shout this from the rooftops.
私はこのことを高いところから大声で叫びたいぐらいです。
I want to paint it in all the colours of the rainbow. このことを虹色で大げさに書きたいぐらいです。
[image] I want to drum it into our hearts and our minds.
私たちの心と気持ちに新たな鼓動を与えたいぐらいです。
Clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ.
主イエス・キリストを着なさい。
This is the ultimate calling of the Christian life.
これがクリスチャン人生の究極の召しです。
This is the ‘how’ of the ‘what’ in the preceding verses.
「主イエス・キリストを身にまとう」ということこそ、前述の節に書かれていた「何を」「どのように」ということなのです。
The verses leading up to this are essential.
前述して書かれていたこれらの節は需要な教えに私たちを導いてくれます。
They spell out the requirements for salvation: repentance and a commitment to live in Christ.
ここでは、悔い改めやキリストのために生きるという誓いなどという救済の必要条件が全て挙げられています。
They call us to godly living.
信仰深く神を敬って生きることに導いてくれます。
But we could be forgiven for thinking that the earlier verses in this passage were Old Testament teaching.
この文節の前の節は旧約聖書の教えだと考えられていると言っても間違いではないと思います。
They tell of how to live a godly life.
どのように信仰深く神を敬って生きるかを教えてくれています。
How to live righteously.
どのように正しく、義を持って生きるかを教えてくれます。
But the true means to living out these verses is found in v14 and it’s in this verse that we find the very meaning of Advent.
しかしここに書かれているように生きるということの本当の意味は、私たちが降臨節の意味を最も理解することのできる１４節にみることができます。
Being “clothed with Christ” has at least three applications:「神を身にまとう」
ということは次の少なくとも三つのことを実践することから成り立ちます。
I. Experience 経験 すること
We don’t just learn and follow, but we also experience Jesus for ourselves.
ただ学んでそのとうりにするだけでなく、実際に自分でイエスを経験することから、「神を身にまとう」ことができます。
We experience His comfort.
神の安らぎを経験することができます。
Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you” so we experience His peace.
イエスは言った。「わたしは平安をあなたがたに残して行く。」このように私たちは神の平安を経験することができるのです。
The joy of the Lord is our experience and strength.
主を賛美する喜びは私たちの経験と強さになる。
We experience His miracles.
私たちは神の奇跡を経験します。
Jesus said we would do even greater things than He had done.
エイスは私たちのように信じる者には、神が起こした以上の素晴らしいことを行うことができると言いました。
Ii. Authority 権威をくださる
Jesus said that when we are in Him, He gives us authority to overcome over the power of the enemy.
イエスは私たちが神を信じれば、敵に打ち勝つという権威を私たちに与えてくれます。
When we are clothed with Him, we may ask for anything in His name and He will do it.
私たちが神を身にまとい、神の名においてお願いをすれば、神は何でも叶えてくれます。
Iii. Favour 御心にかなう –
Clothed in Christ, His favour rests on us.
キリストを身にまとうと、神の御心が私たちにかないます。
“Peace on earth and goodwill to all men on whom his favour rests.”
地の上では、み心にかなう人々に平和があるように
Remember, Advent means ‘coming’.
思い出してみてください。降臨の意味は 「来る」です。
What’s coming? 何が「来る」のでしょうか？
It’s not the law that’s coming, it’s not a way of life that’s coming, it’s not even a ‘what’ that’s coming.
掟が来るわけではありません。「生き様」が来るわけではありません。
ましてや、「何か」が来るわけでもありません。
It’s a ‘who’. それは「誰か」が来るのです。
Advent is all about the coming of Jesus – not just his teaching, not just his morals, not just his miracles – but Jesus Himself.
アドベントはイエスの到来についてです。イエスの教えや教訓、奇跡だけではなく、イエスご自身です。
The first Advent was when Jesus was born as a baby.
最初の降臨はイエスが赤子として生まれたことでした。
The second Advent will be when He returns in glory.
二回目の降臨は神の栄光が戻ることです。
In between, the Spirit of Jesus comes to us to clothe us in Christ.
最初と二番目の降臨の間に、イエスの精霊が私たちがキリストを身にまとう為に、私たちの元に現れました。
We can experience a personal advent of Christ for ourselves.
私たちはキリストの到来を個人的に経験することができます。
That’s how we should understand and approach this season.
以上のように私たちは、降臨節というこの時期を理解し行動すべきです。
We prepare our hearts to receive and experience Jesus personally.
イエス様を個々に体験する為と受け取る為に私たちの心を準備するのです。
Understanding the scriptures and receiving salvation from sin is not the ultimate prize of the Christian life.
聖書に書いてあることの理解と罪からの救いを受け取ることは、クリスチャン生活の最終的な褒美ではありません。
Don’t misunderstand me: salvation in Christ is necessary and it’s glorious.
誤解しないでください。キリストによる救済と栄光は必要です。
But there is a higher calling for the Christian once salvation has been received.
救いを受け入れたらクリスチャンにはより高い召しがあります。
It’s about being ‘clothed with Christ’.
それは「キリストを身につける」ことです。
It’s about knowing and experiencing Jesus personally.
それはイエスを個人的に知ること、経験することです。
Living as a Christian is so much more than ‘putting off sinful ways’.
クリスチャンとして生きることは 「罪を先送りにすること」よりもっと意味があります。
It’s about putting on the righteousness of Christ through a personal encounter with Him.
自身の神との出会い、遭遇の経験によりキリストの義を行うのです。
To all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12
彼を受けいれた者、すなわち、その名を信じた人々には、彼は神の子となる力を与えたのである。ヨハネによる福音書1:12
When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. Acts 19:6
そして、パウロが彼らの上に手をおくと、聖霊が彼らにくだり、それから彼らは異言を語ったり、預言をしたりし出した。使徒言行録19:6
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. Revelation 3:10
忍耐についてのわたしの言葉をあなたが守ったから、わたしも、地上に住む者たちをためすために、全世界に臨もうとしている試錬の時に、あなたを防ぎ守ろう。ヨハネの黙示録3:10
Being clothed with Christ is intensely personal.
キリストを身にまとうというのはとても私的で個人的なことです。
This is my Advent plea to you.
それがあなた方への私からの降臨節の切なるお願いです。
If you know the Word and you love God and you have made a decision to live for Christ but you have never actually encountered Jesus personally or you’re not sure if you have, then do not leave today without spending time in prayer with me or Pastor Mike or one of the other leaders to ensure that you are clothed in Christ.
御言葉を知っていて、神を愛し、キリストのために生きる決心をしたけれども、イエスと個人的に出会っていない、出会ったのかどうか分からないのなら、私かマイク牧師かリーダーの誰かといっしょに祈って、キリストを着ている確信を持ってから今日この場を去るようにしてください。
