I’d like to share with you what Christmas means to me.
では、私が思うクリスマスの意味をみなさんにお話しましょう。
But I’m not just going to tell you.
しかし、ただお話するだけでは、

JOY. 喜び
But the shepherds were not the only ones to experience joy at that first Christmas.
最初のクリスマスで喜びを経験したのは羊飼いだけではありませんでした。
For John the Baptist (who was Jesus’ cousin), even as a baby in the womb, the coming of Jesus meant joy.
バプテスマのヨハネ、ヨハネはイエスのいとこでした。イエスがお腹の中に宿っている時からすでに、イエスがこの世に誕生することは喜びでした。
For Mary, the coming of Jesus led her spirit to rejoice.
マリアにとってイエスがこの世に誕生することは喜びでした。
For Mary, who must have been very confused and afraid at being visited by an angel and falling pregnant to the Holy Spirit and being socially ridiculed for that; despite all the mix of emotions she must have been feeling, her overriding emotion was joy: the coming of Jesus led her spirit to rejoice.
天使が目の前に現れ聖霊によって子供を宿し皆に嘲（あざけ）られ、恐れと困惑を抱いていたマリアにとって、複雑な思いを感じていたにもかかわらず、最初に感じたのは喜びだったでしょう。
For The shepherds the coming of Jesus brought them great joy.
羊飼いたちにとってイエスがこの世に誕生することは大きな喜びをもたらしたことでしょう。
The shepherds must have been terrified.
羊飼いたちはひどく恐れました。
(If you think it would be really nice to meet an angel, think again.
もし、天使に会えたらいいだろうななんて思っているなら、もう一度、考えてみてください。
Any time someone in the Bible meets an angel, the first thing the angel has to say to them is “Don’t be afraid”.
聖書の中で誰かが天使に出会う時はいつも、天使たちはこういいます。「恐れるな。」)
Despite their initial fears, the coming of Jesus brought them great joy.
最初に感じた怖れにもかかわらず、イエスの到来は彼らに喜びをもたらしたのです。
The magi had just travelled for months with sore butts, from riding on smelly camels, and eating stale food.
賢者たちは臭いのひどいラクダに乗って何ヶ月も旅をしました。長く座っているのでお尻も痛くなるし、食べ物も干からびたものをたべなくてはなりませんでした。
I don’t know about you but after all that, I would be grumpy.
みなさんはどうかわかりませんが、私だったら、何ヶ月もそんな状態が続いたら機嫌も悪くなるでしょう。
But when they [the magi] met Jesus, they were overjoyed.
しかし、ついに賢者たちはイエス様に会うことができました。賢者たちは喜びにあふれました。
None of these people were ‘happy’.
たんに「幸せ」だったのではありません。
They weren’t ‘pleasantly surprised’.
「思ったより幸せ」だったわけでもありません。
They weren’t feeling ‘pretty good’.
「とても気分が良かった」わけでもありません。
They were overjoyed.
彼らは「喜びにあふれた」のです。
Their conditions were far from perfect.
賢者たちのイエス様探しをする旅の状況や条件というのは完璧とは程遠く、
They had good reason to grumble.
彼らが機嫌を悪くしてしまう理由はたくさんあったことでしょう。
But they were overjoyed.
しかし彼らは喜びにあふれたのです。
That means they were overflowing with joy.
喜びに満ち溢れたのです。
Why?
なぜでしょう？
Sure, they saw a baby.
確かに、彼らは生まれたばかりの赤ちゃんをみました。
Everyone likes to see a baby and it’s almost impossible when you see a newborn baby to not smile.
誰でも赤ちゃんを見るのは好きでしょうし、ましてや生まれたての赤ちゃんを見たら、誰でも思わず微笑んでしまうでしょう。
But this wasn’t just another baby.
しかし、その赤ちゃんはそこらにいる赤ちゃんではありませんでした。
This baby was special.
この赤ちゃんは特別な赤ちゃんだったのです。
There were over 300 prophecies in the old testament about this baby.
この赤ちゃんについて旧約聖書には300以上の預言がされています。
There were 6 angelic visitations related to the birth of this baby.
この赤ちゃんのイエスの元に天使は６回訪れています。
There were cosmic events in the sky for the birth of this baby.
このイエスの誕生に際して、星が輝くなどの天文学的現象が見られました。
There was political upheaval related to the birth of this baby.
このイエスの誕生に際して、政情が大きく変化しました。
And most of all salvation for the whole world was proclaimed with the birth of this baby.
この赤ちゃんの誕生に関係のある天使の訪れが6回ありました。
この赤ちゃんの誕生の宇宙事象が見られました。
この赤ちゃんの誕生に関係のある政治的激変がありました。
そして何よりも全世界の救いがこの赤ちゃんの誕生とともに宣告されました。
That’s why they were overjoyed to witness the baby Jesus.
だから彼らは赤ちゃんのイエスを目の当たりにすることができて喜びにあふれたのです。
It’s a great story! But that was 2000 years ago.
すごい話だと思いませんか？でも、２０００年も前の話です。
What about us?
今の私たちはどうでしょうか？
Is there any reason for us to be overjoyed at Christmas time today in 2016?
現在、２０１６年のクリスマスに、私たちが喜びに溢れる意味がどこかに見つけられるでしょうか？
That depends.
それは事情によります。
If you look at Christmas trees, or turkeys, or cakes or presents or those crackers that you pull and get the little paper party hat inside, then I assure you, there isn’t much to be overjoyed about this Christmas.
クリスマスツリーを見て、もしくは七面鳥を見て、ケーキやプレゼント、小さな紙の帽子が中に入っているクラッカーを見ていて、 はっきり言えることがあります。それらのことはあふれんばかりの喜びのクリスマスには関係ありません。
You can still have a good day with some happy moments but your spirit will not rejoice, you will not be overjoyed, and you will not be filled with unspeakable joy.
それらのクリスマスの事柄によって、確かに幸せなひと時や幸せな１日を過ごすことはできます。でも、あなたの心は喜ぶことはできません。あふれんばかりの喜びを感じることはできません。言い表せないような喜びで満たされることはありません。
How do we get that?
ではどのように「あふれんばかりの喜び」を感じることができるのでしょうか？
How do we get “unspeakable joy”?
どのように「言い表せないほどの喜び」を感じることができるのでしょうか？
I bet there are some here this evening who don’t believe that’s even possible.
この教会の中でさえ、そんな喜びを感じることが本当にできるのだろうかと疑っている人たちもいることでしょう。
Maybe there’s just too much going on in your life.
多分、あまりにもいろんなことがあなたの人生に起こっているのかもしれません。
Too much hurt. あまりに傷つき、
Too much loss.
なくしたものがたくさんありすぎて、
Too much injustice.
たくさんの不正な出来事
Too much failure.
たくさんの失敗
Too much misery in the world around us.
この世の私たちの周りには、あまりにもたくさんの悲劇が起こっています。
I would like to assure you that it is possible to experience the unspeakable joy that is at the centre of the true Christmas message.
私がここで明言しておきたいのは、「言い表せないほどの喜び」とは、確かに経験することができますし、「言い表せないほどの喜び」とは、まさにクリスマスのメッセージの核心をついているのです。
And here’s how.
そしてどのようにして「言い表せないほどの喜び」を感じられるのかというと、
Listen carefully because tonight I tell you a mystery, a truth of God:
よく聞いてください。あなた方に今晩神様の真実と神秘をお教えします。
Christmas is not only about the birth of Christ. Christmas is also about the rebirth of you and me.
クリスマスはキリストの誕生についてだけではありません。クリスマスは私たちの生まれ変わりについてでもあるのです。
Nicodemus was one of the most distinguished Jewish leaders of his day and Jesus taught him saying,
ニコデマスはユダヤ人の優秀なリーダーたちのうちの一人でした。そしてイエスはニコデマスに次のように教え伝えました。
“I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”
「よくよくあなたに言っておく。だれでも新しく生れなければ、神の国を見ることはできない」。
Nicodemus, the great leader, had no idea what Jesus was talking about. He said,
優秀なリーダーであるニコデマスはイエスがなんの事について話しているのかわかりませんでした。ニコデマスはイエスにこう言いました。
“How can someone be born when they are old? Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
「人は年をとってから生れることが、どうしてできますか。もう一度、母の胎にはいって生れることができましょうか」。
Jesus answered, イエスはこう答えました。
“I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.” 「よくよくあなたに言っておく。だれでも、水と霊とから生れなければ、神の国にはいることはできない。」(That is, baptised in water and in the Holy Spirit. これは聖霊と聖水による洗礼のことです。)
If you’re hearing this for the first time, then, like the great leader Nicodemus, it might be hard to understand.
もし、このようなことを初めて聞いたとしたら、優秀なリーダーであったニコデマスのように、あなたも理解に苦しむでしょう。
But spiritual rebirth is at the heart of the Christmas message, it is central to living a life that pleases God and it is the source of the unspeakable joy that God gives to those who love Him.
しかし実は霊的な生まれ変わりがクリスマスのメッセージなのです。霊的にうまれかわることが神を喜ばせる生き方、人生の核心になります。そして、霊的な生まれ変わりが神を愛する者たちに神が与えてくださる言い表せないほどの喜びの源なのです。
And this rebirth is available to everyone.
そしてこの生まれ変わりは誰にでも与えられています。
It’s not just for one ethnic group, not just for one socioeconomic group, not just for one academic group, not just for one moral group, not just for one religious group.
霊的な生まれ変わりは、ある民族にだけあたえられるとか、社会経済的地位によって決められるとか、一握りの学者たちに与えられるとか、道徳心のある人達だけとか、ある宗教の一派に与えられるというものではありません。
It’s for everyone. それは誰にでも与えられるのです。
Jesus achieved this through his birth, his life, his death and his resurrection.
イエスはご自分の誕生、生涯、死、復活を通してこれを達成されました。
Because Jesus rose from the dead, he lives today.
なぜならイエスは死から復活して、今日も生きているからです。
Because he lives today, he can give new life to those who repent from their sins, call on his name and receive his Holy Spirit.
なぜならイエスは今日も生きておられ、イエスの名を呼び聖霊を受け、自分の罪を悔い改める者たちに新しい命を与えてくださいます。
That’s how we get unspeakable joy: by repenting from our sin, surrendering our lives to Him and receiving the risen Jesus into our hearts.
このように、言い表せないほどの喜びは、罪からの悔い改め、人生を神にゆだねる、よみがえったイエスを心に受け入れることによって得るのです。
Like Mary, the shepherds and the magi at Jesus’ birth, conditions might be tough for you at the moment. Life will not suddenly become perfect because you put your faith in Jesus. In some cases it will actually become harder. But when Jesus enters your life, your sins are forgiven, you are free to live a blessed life, you are right with God, and He promises to give you the unspeakable joy of knowing Him and beginning a life of service to Him.
イエスを人生に迎えると、罪が赦され、祝福された人生を生きることができます。神と正しい関係にあるので、神を礼拝する生き方を与えてくださることと、神を知るという言い表せないほどの喜びを約束してくださいます。
The apostle Peter said, 使徒であるペトロは次のように言いました。
“Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy. 1 Peter 1:8
あなたがたは、イエス・キリストを見たことはないが、彼を愛している。現在、見てはいけないけれども、信じて、言葉につくせない、輝きにみちた喜びにあふれている。ペトロの手紙一1:8
We’re going to continue celebrating Jesus in a minute by taking communion.
今から聖餐式を始めます。聖餐式の間、イエス様を絶えず祝福しましょう。
Communion is a holy sacrament for Christian believers; for those who have been reborn in Christ. It symbolises and celebrates Christ in us, and by taking it we remember his sacrificial love for us.
聖餐式はクリスチャンである信者にとって、キリストにあって生まれ変わった者にとって聖なる式です。私たちのうちのキリストを象徴し称賛します。聖餐を受けることで私たちへの神の犠牲的な愛を覚えるのです。
