There is so much drama and emotion in the Christmas story. God becoming a man is the biggest event in world history, and there is plenty of action to herald this coming, which we observe during the Advent season.
クリスマスの話には劇的な出来事や感情がたくさんあります。神が人となるということは世界の歴史で最大の出来事であり、この出来事の到来を告げる動きがたくさんあります。私たちはこのアドベントのシーズンにそれらを見ていきます。
Before the birth of Jesus, there were two miraculous pregnancies, three angelic visits, numerous glowing prophecies, astrological phenomenon, and several miraculous happenings (like John the Baptist’s father Zechariah being unable to speak and then months later being able to speak).
イエスの誕生前には、2つの奇跡的な妊娠、3人の御使いの訪れ、数々の素晴らしい預言、占星術的現象、いくつかの奇跡的出来事がありました。（例えば、バプテスマのヨハネの父であるザカリヤが話すことができなくなり、数ヵ月後には話せるようになったことなど）
After the birth of Jesus, there was a multitude of angels celebrating, shepherds praising, wise men worshipping, and more glowing prophecies. There was visible glory! You would expect these signs to accompany the miraculous birth of the Son of Almighty God.
イエスの誕生後には、多くの御使いが祝い、羊飼いが賛美し、東方の博士たちが礼拝し、さらにすばらしい預言がありました。目に見える栄光でした。これらのしるしは全能の神の御子の奇跡的誕生に伴って起こったことだと思うでしょう。
This morning I would like to look at some of the prophecies given at that time because they tell us not only a lot about this child that would be born, but also, indirectly, about those who choose to follow this child.
今朝は、その当時に与えられた預言のいくつかを見ていきたいと思います。なぜならこれらの預言は、生まれてくる子についてだけではなく、間接的に、その子に従う者たちについて語っているからです。
Mary was highly favoured by God. She was chosen especially by God, no doubt for her good character and her faithfulness, to carry for nine months and to bear God’s Son. In this revelation she was described as highly favoured and blessed. This morning I would like to look at what a highly favoured and blessed life really looks like, because it’s something that all Christians share.
マリヤは神に恵まれた人でした。きっと善良で忠実であった彼女は、神の御子を9ヶ月身ごもって産むために特別に神に選ばれた人でした。この啓示では、マリヤは恵まれて祝福されていると書かれています。今朝は、恵まれて祝福された人生がどんなものなのかを見ていきたいと思います。それはクリスチャンみんなが共有していることだからです。
To use a modern analogy, imagine if the new Emperor and Empress of Japan needed a surrogate mother to carry and give birth to their child. They searched the whole country for the healthiest young girl of the finest character, and they found her in Remi.
現代の例えを使って説明するならば、新しい日本の天皇皇后が子どもを産むために代理母を必要としていたとします。国中の最も優れた人格をもった最も健康な若い女性を探しました。そしてその女性はレミだということが分かりました。
The Emperor sent dignitaries to her and to us to explain the situation and to assure us that, for her service, Remi would forever live a life that was highly favoured and blessed. Well, for a start, if Remi was to carry the Emperor’s child, I would expect the highest grade medical care in a 5 star hospital. I would expect punctual and comfortable transport. I would expect a crack security team to be watching over her. And I would expect our whole family to be generously compensated for this great task.
天皇は高官たちを私たちのところに送り、状況を説明し、代理母として仕えることにより、レミは恵まれて祝福された人生を一生送るだろうと保証しました。それならまず、レミが天皇の子を身ごもるなら、5つ星の病院で最高の医療を受け、時間どおりに快適に運ばれ、一流の警備員たちがレミの警戒にあたることを私は期待します。そしてこの大任のために家族みんなが寛大に補償されることを期待します。
Now, that’s for the Emperor of Japan. How much more should Mary have expected for finding favour in serving the Lord God Almighty, the creator of heaven and earth?
これは日本の天皇の場合です。では、マリヤは全能の神、天と地を創造された主に仕えているのですから、もっと良い待遇を受けるべきではないでしょうか？
But what did Mary experience in all this? Yes, she received some great promises, a couple of angelic visitations and some strange men dropping in to admire her child.
しかし、マリヤが経験したことは何だったでしょう？たしかにマリヤには、大きな約束、御使いの訪れがあり、見知らぬ人たちが彼女の子を拝みに来ました。
But she was also forced to travel 180 kilometres on a donkey while heavily pregnant. When it came time to have the baby, there was no accomodation at all. She had to give birth in the filth of a stable amongst farm animals without any medical help. After the baby was born, they received death threats and had to flee to Egypt where they knew no-one, couldn’t speak the language and where Joseph had no employment waiting for him.
しかし彼女は、出産を間近に控えた時にろばに乗って180キロの旅を強いられました。子が産まれようとする時には、泊まるところがどこにもありませんでした。家畜がいる馬小屋の汚いところで、医療の助けなしで出産しなければなりませんでした。出産後、殺害の脅迫を受け、誰も知っている人のいない、言葉も分からない、ヨセフの仕事のないエジプトに逃げなくてはなりませんでした。
They must have been wondering what was going on. Was this what favour looked like? Where was the blessing? Where was the glory? If this was the way the Emperor was treating Remi, I’d feel ripped off and would start reading through the contract again.
いったいどうなっているのかと二人は思ったことでしょう。これが恵まれたということなのか？どこに祝福があるのか？栄光はどこにあるのか？もし天皇がレミをこのように扱ったなら、私はだまされたと思い、契約をもう一度読み直すことでしょう。
We all know where this story goes for Mary. This promised child grows to be the most persecuted man on the planet. He is insulted, abused, mocked, betrayed, deserted, hated, punched in the face, whipped to within an inch of His life, crucified on a cross and killed. Then most of His closest friends were killed, too. How could anyone call this a life of favour and blessing?
その後、マリヤにはどんなことが起こるのか私たちは知っています。この約束された子は地上で最も迫害を受けた人となるのです。侮辱され、虐げられ、あざけられ、裏切られ、見捨てられ、憎まれ、顔を殴られ、死ぬ一歩手前までむち打たれ、十字架につけられ、殺されたのです。そしていちばん身近にいた友のほどんども殺されました。これが恵まれて祝福された人生だと言えるでしょうか？
Well, we also know how this story ends. It doesn’t! It continues onto resurrection, salvation, new life, revelation, power, mercy, grace, forgiveness, healing, joy, peace and love. A life of favour and blessing – a life of glory – is not synonymous with a life that is trouble-free and comfortable. It’s just not!
でも私たちはこれがどのように終わるかも知っています。というか終わらないのです。復活、救い、新しい命、啓示、力、憐れみ、恵み、赦し、癒し、喜び、平安、愛へと続いていくのです。恵みと祝福の人生、栄光の人生は何のトラブルもない人生、快適な人生と同義ではありません。全く違うのです。
This is so true. This is the blessed life. This is the promise for all who believe in Jesus, receive Him into their hearts and choose to follow Him. But Jesus also said,
本当にこのとおりです。これが祝福された人生です。これはイエスを信じ、心に受け入れ、従おうとするすべての人への約束です。しかしイエスはこうも言いました、
Paul knew this. He described his life of blessing and favour:
パウロはこのことを知っていました。彼は自分の祝福と恵みの人生をこのように言っています：
But Paul also said,
しかしパウロはこうも言いました、
In fact Paul talks about the incredible joy he has in the Lord literally dozens of times throughout his letters because of the presence of the Holy Spirit in his life, and because of the thrill of Christian fellowship. Peter and the other apostles said the same thing.
事実、パウロは主にあるこの上ない喜びについて彼の手紙の中で何度も語っています。それは彼には聖霊のご臨在があり、クリスチャン同士の交わりの感動があるからです。ペテロと他の使途たちも同じことを言っています。
The examples of the apostles are extreme but they illustrate the truth that a life blessed by God and filled with joys will not be free of trouble. I want us to be prepared for the Christian life – for both its hardships and its glory – and Advent is a good time for us to do this. If you think the Christian life is all about hardships, then you’re missing the big picture and you need to experience the joy of God’s Kingdom in your life today.
使途たちの例は極端ですが、神に祝福されて喜びに満たされた人生は、何のトラブルもない人生ではないという真実を説明しています。私たちがクリスチャン生活を送る準備ができるように、困難にも栄光にも備えましょう。アドベントはそうするのにいい時です。もしクリスチャン生活は困難だらけだと思っているなら、全体像を見失っています。神の御国の喜びを今日、あなたの人生において経験しないといけません。
If you think the Christian life is all about good times and smiles, then you’re naive and you need to understand what true blessing looks like.
クリスチャン生活は良いことばかりで笑顔でいられると思っているなら、あなたは考えが甘く、本当の祝福がどんなものか理解する必要があります。
This Advent, how do we set our hearts right to live a life of favour and blessing?
このアドベントの時期に、恵みと祝福の人生を生きるために私たちの心をどのように正しくしたらいいのでしょうか？

Repent.
悔い改める。
No-one explains this better than the prophet Isaiah:
預言者イザヤほどうまく説明している人はいません。

Submit.
従う。
No-one demonstrated this better than Mary. She was a smart girl. She would have known when the angel spoke to her that she was facing a life of ridicule and shame. But she said,
マリヤほどうまく実行している人はいません。彼女は賢い少女でした。御使いが来て語った時、自分が人からあざ笑われ、恥ずかしい思いをするようになることを知っていました。それでも彼女はこう言いました、

Receive.
受け入れる。
This is what the disciples did on the day of Pentecost. They waited until they received the Holy Spirit because they knew (because God had told them) that they couldn’t live the Christian life in their own strength. They had to be clothed with power from on high. And they knew that the joy of the Lord would be their strength.
ペンテコステの日に弟子たちがしたことです。彼らは聖霊を受けるまで待っていました。なぜなら（神にそうするように言われたからであり）、自分たちの力ではクリスチャンとして生きていけないことを知っていたからです。いと高きところから力を着せられなければなりませんでした。そして主の喜びが彼らの力であることを知っていました。

Persevere.
忍耐を尽くす。
Jesus’ Parable of the Sower, and His seven letters to the churches in the book of Revelation emphasise this. Don’t give up when hardship comes your way. Hold on to what you have. Cling to the promises. Don’t give up coming to church. Don’t be discouraged by what others say, or by the weight of your own sin. Overcome the sin. Walk in obedience. The righteous live by faith.
イエスの種蒔きのたとえと黙示録に書かれている教会への7つの手紙はこのことを強調しています。困難がやってきてもあきらめないでください。持っているものを手放さないようにしなさい。約束を固く信じなさい。教会に行くことをあきらめてはいけません。人の言うことや自分自身の罪の重さにがっかりさせられてはいけません。罪に打ち勝ちなさい。従って歩みなさい。義人は信仰によって生きます。

Rejoice.
喜ぶ。
Always. God is too good, His plans are too wonderful and His love is too great to not rejoice. We have been saved by the blood of Jesus. We have received His Holy Spirit. We have the revelation of His Word. We have the hope of eternal life. Give thanks in all circumstances.
いつも喜んでいなさい。神はあまりにも良いお方です。神のご計画はあまりにもすばらしく、神の愛はあまりにも大きいので喜ばずにはいられません。私たちはイエスの血によって救われたのです。私たちは聖霊を受け入れたのです。私たちには神の御言葉の啓示があります。私たちには永遠の命の希望があります。すべてのことについて感謝しなさい。
