アメリカでは今度の木曜日が感謝祭に当たるので，少し早いですが，アメリカ人の兄弟姉妹に「良い感謝祭を」と祝福したいと思います。
What does it mean to give thanks in all circumstances?
さて，「どんな状況にあっても感謝を捧げる」とは，どのようなことでしょうか。
Paul was on board a ship that had gone through a vicious storm, and was trying to make an emergency landing. Though a prisoner, Paul was permitted some privileges of which one was to counsel the people onboard the ship.
（「使徒の働き27章ローマへの旅」の話です）パウロは船に乗っていました。その船は激しい嵐を通り抜けて緊急上陸を目指していました。パウロはとらわれの身ではありましたが、船の乗組員に助言を与える特権を許されていました。
For the first time in two weeks, light began to appear, and Paul encouraged the men to take some food.
嵐の日々が二週間続いたあと，ようやく空が明るくなりはじめました。パウロはみんなに食事をとるように勧めました。
Why couldn’t they eat? Possibly because of the effects of the storm. They felt nauseated and seasick.
なぜ彼らは何も食べられなかったのでしょうか。恐らくは嵐の影響だったことでしょう。吐き気がして船酔いしていたにちがいありません。
Maybe due to the necessity to be vigilant and watchful. Or, maybe due to the lack of food from lightening the ship (they threw away some cargos), and perhaps the desire to fast to please their “gods,” had kept the passengers from eating.
それに，嵐のなかで見張りをすることの緊張もあったでしょうし，あるいは食料が足りていなかったからということも考えられます。というのも，船を軽くするために積み荷を海に捨てる必要があったからです。またもしかすると，自分たちの考える「神様たち」を喜ばせたいと思ったのかもしれません。いずれにせよ，人々は長い間食事をとっていなかったのです。
Here in our text, Paul leads in the eating of a meal on board the ship before the shipwreck.
今日引用する「使徒の働き」27章には，パウロが，難破しそうな船にありながら率先して食事を取ろうとしている様子が描かれています。
[Spoiler alert: Nobody died in the shipwreck just like what an angel of God had told him in Acts 27:22~24.]
[ご存じの方も多いでしょうが，結局のところ，このような困難な状況でも死者は出ませんでした。それは27章22節から24節にあるように，神の使いの言った通りでした。]
Before the meal Paul did a simple but most instructive thing: He gave thanks for the food that was being given to those on board the ship.
食事の前にパウロは簡単かつもっとも有益なことをしました。船に乗っている人たちに与えられた食べ物に対する感謝を表したのです。
How did the apostle Paul give thanks? How do we give thanks?
パウロはどのようにして感謝を表したのでしょうか。私たちはどのようにして感謝しますか。

Give thanks in everything
全てのことに感謝する
“Gave thanks to God.” This is such a simple act, yet few people thank God for their food or for anything. It is a grateful heart that is a good heart.
「神様に感謝した」。とてもシンプルな行動です。でも、食べ物やその他のことについて神様に感謝する人は多くありません。感謝の心は，善良な心です。
We don’t give thanks for everything, but in everything. We acknowledge God’s sovereign hand is in charge, and not blind fate or chance.
何かを得たからと感謝するのではなく，いまある全てのことに感謝するのです。それは，全て神様のご意志のもとにあると認めるということです。すべては，盲目的なさだめや偶然によるものではないのです。
JOKE: Two men were walking through a field one day when they spotted an enraged bull. Instantly they darted toward the nearest fence. The storming bull followed in hot pursuit, and it was soon apparent they wouldn’t make it.
[こんな笑い話があります。]ある日二人の男が野原を歩いていて，怒り狂った雄牛に出くわしました。二人は急いで一番近くの柵に向かって走りました。しかし，猛烈な勢いで追ってくる雄牛を見て、とても間に合わないと思いました。
Terrified, the one shouted to the other, “Put up a prayer, John. We’re in for it!”
怖くなって一人が友達に叫びました「ジョン、早く祈ってくれよ！」
John answered, “I can’t. I’ve never made a public prayer in my life.”
するとジョンが答えました「無理だよ。人前でお祈りなんてしたことないよ！」
“But you must!” implored his companion. “The bull is catching up to us.”
「いいから祈ってくれ！」と男は答えました。「早くしないと雄牛にやられる！」
“All right,” panted John, “I’ll say the only prayer I know, the one my father used to repeat at the table: ‘O Lord, for what we are about to receive, make us truly thankful.'”
「分かったよ」ジョンはあえぐように答えました。「自分の知ってるただ一つの祈りのことばを言うよ。ご飯の前に父さんがいつも言ってたんだ。『神様、目の前の与えられたものに感謝します！』」
In your learning, learn to give thanks, especially to God. To not know how to give thanks means you have a character problem. This is the single charge that God has against those who don’t believe in Him.
様々な学びのなかで，感謝すること，とくに神様に感謝することを学んでください。感謝の仕方を知らないのは，なんらかの性格的な問題を抱えているからです。この「感謝のない心」こそ，神様が，その存在を信じない人に対して許せないとお考えになるものです。
You may fail in many areas of life, but you will have a successful life if you know how to give thanks to God for His blessings.
わたしたちは人生において様々な失敗をするでしょう。それでも，神様からいただく祝福に感謝するすべを知っていれば，間違いなく人生は成功するでしょう。

Give thanks persistently
つねに感謝する
“After he said this, he took some bread and gave thanks to God.” Paul gave thanks in spite of two things.
使徒の働き 27:35 – 35 （こう言うと、）パウロはパンを取り、みなの前で感謝の祈りをしてから、裂いて食べ始めたのです
難破船にあってパウロたちには二つ問題がありましたが，それにも関わらず感謝を捧げました。

He gave thanks in spite of his troubles.
パウロはその困難な状況にも関わらず感謝した
He was experiencing a tough storm at sea but he still gave thanks. A good way to combat bad circumstances is to give thanks to God. Failure to give thanks will only make your situation worse. Thank God even if you are up to your neck in problems. The ladder out of your troubles is thanksgiving.
パウロは海上での嵐に遭遇したにも関わらず感謝を捧げました。大変な状況に対応する方法の一つは神様に感謝することです。感謝しなければ，状況は悪化するだけです。だから、目の前に問題が山積みになっていても感謝を忘れないでください。感謝の心こそが，わたしたちを悩みから救うはしごとなるのです。

He gave thanks in spite of his possessions.
パウロは今持てるだけのものに感謝した
He gave thanks though he did not have much. The food for which he gave thanks was not a great meal. Sailors seldom eat well on a cruise especially in those days after going through a storm. But Paul would thank God for what he had though it wasn’t much. If we would quit complaining about what we do not have and thank God for what we do have, we would be of a much better attitude and honor God more.
物があまりなかったにも関わらずパウロは感謝しました。そのときの食事は大したものではなかったと思います。船乗りが豪勢な食事をすることはめったにありません。嵐の後ならいうまでもないでしょう。それでも、十分でなかったにも関わらずパウロは神に感謝しました。足りないからと不満を言うのをやめて，いまあるだけのものに感謝することができたら，私たちの態度はずっと良くなって，神をもっと敬えるようになるでしょう。

“He took some bread and gave thanks to God.”
使徒の働き 27:35 (JLB) – 35 こう言うと、パウロはパンを取り、みなの前で感謝の祈りをしてから、裂いて食べ始めたのです
I have many unforgettable conversations with my English students in Kyoto. Someone said, “Why should I thank God? My husband works and brings home money to buy everything we need. I should thank him instead.” Another one really astounded me. She said, “My God is my husband!”
わたしは京都で英語を教えていましたが，生徒さんたちと交わした会話には，忘れられないものがいくつもあります。ある人はこう言いました。「なぜ神様に感謝する必要があるのですか？わたしの夫は働いて必要なものが買えるだけのお金を稼いでくれます。だからわたしは、神様じゃなくて夫に感謝しないといけないと思います」もう一人のことばはわたしを驚愕させました。彼女は「私の神様は夫です」とまで言ったのです。
People are prone to ascribe their appreciation to something or someone else instead of God Himself. Their view of things is either shortsighted or misplaced. Do you remember the Israelites ascribing their deliverance from slavery in Egypt to a golden calf they molded, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt” (Exodus 32:4,8).
人々には，神そのものではなく他のなにか，あるいは他のだれかに感謝の念を抱く傾向があります。彼らのものの見方は近視眼的で，見当違いです。エジプトから無事脱出したイスラエル人が神様より金の子牛に感謝したという聖書の記述を思い出してください。 出エジプト記 32:4 – 4 アロンはその金を火で溶かし、鋳型に入れ、道具を使って子牛の形にしました。イスラエルの民は、「イスラエルばんざい！ これこそ、われわれをエジプトから連れ出した神だ」と言って、喜び叫びました。
The same happened during Paul and Barnabas’s 1st missionary journey. They reached Lystra and healed a lame man. When this happened, Acts 14:11~13 records that “11 When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, ‘The gods have come down to us in human form!’ 12 Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker. 13 The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.”
パウロとバルナバが最初の伝道活動に出た時にも同じようなことが起こっています。リストラに着いて足の不自由な方を癒やしたときです。
使徒の働き 14:11-13 – 11 これを見た人々は、その地方のことばで、「神々だ。人間の姿をした神々だ」と叫びました。 12 そして、大騒ぎしながら、二人をギリシヤの神々にまつり上げたのです。バルナバはゼウス、パウロはおもに話をしたので、ヘルメスだということになりました。 13 町の門のすぐ外にあるゼウス神殿の祭司までが、花飾りを持って駆けつけ、門のところで群衆といっしょに雄牛を数頭いけにえとし、二人にささげようとしました。
God is the Source of our blessings and needs to be the first One thanked for our blessing. “For in Him, we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). Those who give thanks to God are more likely to give thanks to their fellow man. An ungrateful heart towards God produces and ungrateful heart towards men.
神様こそが，私たちを祝福してくださる源なのですから，私たちは何よりもまず神様に感謝を捧げるべきです。
使徒の働き 17:28 – 28 私たちは神の中に生き、動き、存在しているのです。あなたがたの詩人の一人が、『私たちは、神の子孫だ』と言ったとおりです。
神様に感謝している人は周りの人にも感謝していると思います。そして、神様への感謝の心を持たない人は周りの人に対しても恩知らずな態度でいるでしょう。

Give thanks publicly
人前で感謝する
“Gave thanks to God in front of them all.” Paul was not ashamed to recognize God in public. He gave thanks before 276 people (Acts 27:37) and set the example himself by eating.
使徒の働き 27:35 – 35 こう言うと、パウロはパンを取り、みなの前で感謝の祈りをしてから、裂いて食べ始めたのです。
「人々の前で神に対する感謝を表す」ということ。パウロは人前で神の存在を認めること恥じたりはしませんでした。彼は船に乗っていた276人の前で神様に感謝し，自分自身を手本として示したのです。
His giving thanks was a testimony for God. So many people do not give thanks in public. Go to a public restaurant and observe how few people give thanks for their meals.
彼の感謝の言葉は神様への「証」でした。多くの人は人前で感謝を表せない。レストランに行って，食前の感謝を捧げている人が何人ぐらいいるか，探してみてください。
Don’t be shy to testify about what God is doing in your life. Share your story and give glory to God.
どうか恥ずかしがらずに，あなたの人生に神様がどんなことをしてくださっているかを周りの人に明かしてください。自分のストーリーを他の人と分かち合って，神様に栄光を捧げるのです。
If you are not willing to give God thanks in public, do not be surprised if God is not willing to bless you in public.
人前で神様に感謝することがためらわれるのなら、神様が人前であなたを祝福なさらないとしても驚いてはいけませんよ。
Conclusion
Scottish minister Alexander Whyte was known for his uplifting prayers in the pulpit. He always found something for which to be grateful.
スコットランド人の牧師アレクザンダー・ホワイトは説教の際の明るい祈りでよく知られていました。彼はつねに感謝すべき何かを見つけることのできる人でした。
One Sunday morning the weather was so gloomy that one church member thought to himself, “Certainly the preacher won’t think of anything for which to thank the Lord on a wretched day like this.”
ある日曜日の朝，とても鬱陶しい天気で，教会のメンバーの一人はこんな風に思いました。「こんな鬱陶しい日に感謝できることなんて，牧師先生でも何も思いつかないだろうなあ」
Much to his surprise, however, Whyte began by praying, “We thank Thee, O God, that it is not always like this.”
しかし、驚いたことに，ホワイト氏の説教はこのような祈りから始めまったのです。「神様、毎日の天気が今日のようでないことに感謝します」
The Christian who walks with the Lord and keeps in constant communion with Him will see many reasons for rejoicing and thanksgiving all day long. Let us then give thanks to God in everything, persistently and publicly.
主ととともに歩み，主と常に交わりをもつクリスチャンであれば，喜びと感謝を捧げるたくさんの理由を日々のなかに見つけることでしょう。であればこそ、私たちも毎日、全てのことに対して，絶えることなく，人前でも，神に感謝を捧げようではありませんか。
