Just over a week ago, Kumamoto experienced a horrific run of earthquakes which killed, injured and displaced many, and which destroyed much of the whole area. [images] As I mentioned in Tuesday’s church mail, the first thing we need to understand is that this was not God’s punishment on the people of Kumamoto. We know this because there was no warning beforehand. God always warns – many times – before He punishes.

The Biblical Christian response: in such situations is not asking why and looking to lay blame but as much as possible helping those who are suffering, and using the experience to understand our own mortality and to lead us to repentance so that we can be right with God.

You might be surprised that this is a very apt introduction to the book of Joel. Today we continue our walk through the Bible and we are now at Joel, the second of the twelve minor prophets at the back of the Old Testament.
驚かれるかも知れませんが、これがヨエル書のとても適切な序説なのです。今日は私達は聖書の歩みを続けて行きます今はヨエル書です、旧約聖書の最後にある12小預言書の中で２番目に位置します。
The book of Joel starts with an invasion of locusts that destroy Judah. Often the Bible uses an image of locusts to describe conquering armies but in this case it was actually a plague of locusts which had laid waste to the whole land. [images] And just like with the people of Kumamoto, this invasion of locusts was not a punishment from God on the people of Judea. But Joel insisted that the proper response was still repentance from sin and a whole-hearted turning to God.
ヨエル書はユダを滅ぼすいなごが押し寄せてくるところから始まります。
しばしば聖書は軍勢の支配する描写をイナゴのイメージを使いますが、この場合は実際には全体の土地を荒らすイナゴの天災（異常発生）でした。そして熊本の人々と同様、このイナゴの大襲来は、神からユダの人々へ与えた罰ではありませんでした。しかしヨエルは

One of the key, central verses in Joel does two things: it sets the tone and standard in imploring the people to repentance, and it declares the very essence of who God is:

“Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate,slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity. Joel 2:12,13

As beautiful as this passage is, it might seem a little harsh. Repentance is for when we have done wrong, right? So why are we encouraged to repent when we haven’t done anything wrong? Turning to God in repentance and fasting and weeping and mourning is simply the place to start when things have gone bad. I know that some, maybe many of you, have been struggling with health, finance, relationship and other issues. I would encourage you, as Joel does, to “rend your heart”, to repent and return to the Lord with all your heart, not because you’re particularly ‘bad’ but because that’s the platform from which we rebuild our lives.
この聖句は素晴らしいと同じぐらいそれは少し厳しいように見えるかも知れません。悔い改めは私達が間違った行いをした時にするのでしょう？そうなら何故私達は何も間違ったことをしていないときに悔い改めをすることを勧められるのでしょうか？
悔い改めて神に立ち返ること、断食をすること、嘆き、悲しむことは、単に何かがうまくいかなかったときに始めることです。多分多くの人達は健康、金融、人間関係、その他の問題で苦労しているかも知れないというのを私はいくつか知っています。私はあなた方にヨエルのように“あなたがたの心を引き裂け” 悔い改め、そしてあなた方の心全体で主に立ち返れ、とお勧めしたいです、なぜならあなた方が特に “悪い”のではなく悔い改め、主に立ち返るのは、私達が私達の人生を作り直す場だからです。
The end of Joel chapter 2 is one of the most famous passages in all of Scripture, and I want you to note that it follows tragedy and repentance.
ヨエル書２章の最後は聖書全体の中で最も勇名な聖書個所です、そして私はあなた方に注目してもらいたいですそれは次の惨事と悔い改めです。
“And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the Lord has said, even among the survivors whom the Lord calls.” Joel 2:28-32

This passage is quoted almost word for word at another place in the Bible? Where?
Acts 2:16-21 when the fulfilling of this prophecy takes place.
The “And afterward” at the beginning of this passage in Joel refers to “when the Messiah comes”.

Remember, every Old Testament book points to Christ. Every part of the Bible refers to God’s ultimate plan of salvation through God’s Son, Jesus Christ.

There are some key points: about this prophecy and its fulfilment:

i. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of the Lord will be upon all people. It will be upon men and women, it will be upon the old and the young, it will be upon people of all nations.

万国の人々全てにです。
ii. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of the Lord will produce unmistakable manifestations of the Holy Spirit: visions, dreams, signs in the heavens, the speaking of unlearned languages, prophecies and more.
主の日の聖霊の注ぎは間違いなく聖霊の現れをうみだします。幻、夢、天にわざを示し、学んでいない言葉で話す、預言、などなどもっと。
iii. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of the Lord will see the salvation and deliverance of many.
主の日の聖霊の注ぎは多くの人の救いと解放を見ます。
This end section of Joel chapter 2 through to the end of chapter 3 (the end of the book) is like a giant conversation across 900 years between the prophet Joel and the apostle Peter. I encourage you to read the whole of Joel 2 and 3 and Acts 2 together and compare them.

Joel 3 finishes prophetically with judgement on the nations and blessing for God’s people. Acts 2 takes off from these very points:

Peter explains how Jesus is the demonstrated fulfilment of this prophecy from Joel.

Jesus is the fulfilment of this prophecy for all people regardless of gender, age, education, country, language, culture. And we here at MIC are very clear evidence of this!

The book of Joel, hand in hand with Acts 2, proclaims the following two extraordinary truths that change the world, and that change our lives:

All who call on the name of the Lord will be saved. They will be forgiven, and they will be given the Holy Spirit. They will be called children of God.
主の御名を呼び求める者はみな救われる。彼らは（主の御名を呼び求める者は）許さ
れ、聖霊が与えられます。 彼らは神の子と呼ばれます。
All who call on the name of the Lord will be delivered. They will be set free from the sins and the spiritual constraints of living in the world. They will be delivered – just as we pray in the Lord’s Prayer – from evil. Deliverance from the evil without and the evil within. They will live under a new King in a new Kingdom.
主の御名を呼び求める者はみな解き放たれる。彼らは（主の御名を呼び求める者は）

Then what? After we’re saved, after we’re delivered, then what?

The book of Joel concludes with blessing for God’s people. 3:18 says that “a fountain will flow out of the Lord’s house”.

Acts chapter 2 (42,43) describes this in more concrete terms:

The blessing for God’s people which follows repentance and salvation and deliverance is the fountain which flows from the Lord’s house. The fountain which flows from the Lord’s house is the Holy Spirit which is (not limited to but is) manifest in and through the body of Christ. The Holy Spirit working, flowing within the church, the body of Christ, is the blessing for God’s people that God spoke of long ago.
悔い改め、救い、解放へと導く神の民の祝福は、主の家からわきでる泉です。主の家からわきでる泉は、キリストの体のうちに、キリストの体を通して（だけに限られていませんが）現されます。キリストの体である教会のうちにはたらき、あふれる聖霊は、神がずっと前から語っておられた神の民への祝福です。
I want to encourage you to do two things this morning.
私はあなた方に今２つする事をお勧めしたいです。
To seek a fresh filling of the Holy Spirit in your heart
心に聖霊の新しい満たしを求める
To seek a fresh devotion to the church here at MIC,
箕面国際教会への新たな献身を求める
because these are both God’s blessing to you.
