Introduction
Today is International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church.
今日は迫害されている教会のための世界的な祈りの日となります。
Finding joy in trials is part of the Christian life—and we can learn a lot from the persecuted church about joy.
試練の中でも喜びを見つけることはクリスチャンとしての人生の一部となります。そして、迫害を受けた教会から、喜びについてたくさん学ぶことができます。
Brothers and sisters, consider this. According to Open Doors, every month, on average:
兄弟姉妹の皆さん、次のことを考えてみてください。

345 Christians are killed for faith-related reasons.

219 Christians are detained without trial, arrested, sentenced and imprisoned.

According to the Pew Research Center, 75 percent of the world’s population live in areas with severe religious restrictions—many of them are Christians.
ピューリサーチセンターとは、ワシントンD.C.に拠点を置くアメリカのシンクタンク機構ですが、そのピューリサーチセンターによると、世界の人口の75％が、厳しい宗教的制限のある地域に住んでいると報告されており、その多くはキリスト教徒だと言われています。
The US Department of State has identified 60 different countries where Christians face persecution from their neighbors or from their government—simply because they believe in Jesus Christ. Daily life for these Christians is a struggle.
米国務省は、隣人や政府からの迫害に直面しているキリスト教徒が存在する60か国を特定しました。迫害の理由は、彼らただがイエス・キリストを信じているからです。このようにクリスチャンの人生は、大変な苦しみを伴うのです。
The hostility they experience as a result of their faith can take many forms. Some suffer verbal harassment and discrimination at work or school. Others endure more extreme persecution, including imprisonment, torture, rape and even death.
信仰がゆえに、彼らは他者からの敵意を多くの形で経験することになります。職場や学校で言葉による嫌がらせや差別を受ける人もいます。投獄、拷問、レイプ、さらには死に至るようなひどい迫害に耐えなければならない人もいます。
From Nigeria to North Korea, Syria to Sudan and so many other countries in between, following Jesus comes with intense trials, daily dangers and even the risk of losing one’s life.
ナイジェリアから北朝鮮、シリアからスーダン、そしてその中間にある他の多くの国々には、イエスが経験したように、厳しい試練、日々の危険、さらには命を落とすリスクさえあります。
Today, let’s just look at one country: India. In India, Christians just like you and me are being attacked, shunned, kicked out of villages, falsely accused, imprisoned and cut off from their families because of their faith in Jesus.
今日は、インドでの状況を見ていきましょう。インドでは、あなたや私のようなクリスチャンが、イエスへの信仰のために、攻撃され、疎外され、村から追い出され、不当に告発され、投獄され、家族から引き離されています。
Here are some important statistics we should know about India.
インドについて知っておくべき重要な統計をいくつかご紹介します。
Christians represent less than 5% of the population in India.
インドのクリスチャン人口は、インド全体の5％未満を示しています。
Since the election of Prime Minister Modi in 2014, persecution against Christians has risen by 400%.
2014年にモディ首相が選出されて以来、キリスト教徒に対する迫害は400％も増加しています。
Today, India is #10 on the World Watch List of countries where it’s most dangerous to follow Jesus.
今日（こんにち）、インドは、「イエスに従うことが最も危険な国の世界監視リスト」において第10位です。
And yet, many of these believers are counting it all joy to be persecuted for the name of Jesus.
それでも、これらの信者の多くは、イエスの名のために迫害されることが至上の喜びであると思っています。

Arjun & Neha, and many believers like them, can teach us so much about this passage in James 1.
I want to share three points about trials and persecution with you today, and then I want to end with a time of prayer for our persecuted brothers and sisters in India.

Trials and persecution are part of the Christian life
試練と迫害はキリスト教徒の人生の一部である
Scripture tells us that when we follow Jesus, we will face trials and persecution—not all the time, of course, but challenges will come. Some will be short, and others will be seasons. These events shouldn’t surprise us or cause our faith to weaken.
聖書は、私たちがイエスに従うとき、試練と迫害に直面すると言っています。もちろん、常に試練があるわけではありませんが、いずれやってくるでしょう。短い試練もあれば、人生の転機に起こる試練もあります。しかし、私たちが試練に圧倒されたり、試練によって信仰が弱まようなことがあってはなりません。
Charles Spurgeon: “Persecution is the heirloom of the Church, and the ensign of the elect.”
イギリスの著名なバプテスト派の牧師、伝道者、説教者であったチャールズ・スポルジョンは「迫害は教会が受け継ぐ宝であり、神によって選ばれた民のシンボルである。」という名言を残しました。

Persecution purifies our faith
迫害は信仰を清める
Why would we have joy in trials of many kinds? James says that these trials produce perseverance. And that, ultimately, these trials and tests will grow us into maturity in Christ.
なぜ、私たちは多くの試練の中に喜びを持つのでしょうか？ヤコブは、試練が忍耐を生み出すと言っています。そして、最終的に、試練と苦しみは私たちをキリストにおける成熟へと導くと言っています。
God’s goal for our life isn’t comfort but character—specifically, the character of Christ. He wants us to become more and more like Jesus.
神が私たちに与えた目標は、安らぎではなく、人格の形成、具体的言うと、私たちがキリストのような人格を持つようになることです。神は私たちが、もっともっとイエスのようになって欲しいと願っています。
Tim Keller: “While other worldviews lead us to sit in the midst of life’s joys, foreseeing the coming sorrows, Christianity empowers its people to sit in the midst of the world’s sorrows, tasting the coming joy.”
神学者であるティム・ケラーはこう言っています、「他の宗教における世界観は、私たちに人生の喜びを味わわせてから、将来起こる悲しみのことを教える。しかし、キリスト教は、まず人々にこの世の苦しみを教え、そして未来にこれから来る喜びを味わわせてくれる。」

Persecution should point us to our deepest joy in
Christ
迫害は、私たちをキリストにおける深い喜びに導いてくれる
Trials and persecution should remind us that this world is not our home. Like our brothers and sisters in Hebrews 11, we long for our eternal home with Christ.
試練と迫害は、この世界が私たちの帰るところではないということを思い知らされせてくれます。ヘブル書11章に書かれている兄弟姉妹のように、私たちはキリストと共にある永久の故郷を切望します。
We’re called to deep obedience every day we wake up on this earth, but there’s a danger in getting too comfortable. Persecution is a powerful reminder that Christ is the prize. He’s our joy. He’s our life.
私たちはこの地球で、毎日しっかりと目を覚ましているように強いられています。しかし、この世をあまりにも快適に感じすぎると危険です。迫害に遭うことによって「キリストがその報酬として私たちが受け取るものである」ことを強く思い知らされます。神は私たちの喜びです。神は私たちの命そのものです。
C.S. Lewis: “Life with God is not immunity from difficulties, but peace in difficulties.”
キリスト教信者である作家のC.S.ルイスは「神との生活は困難から免れることではなく、困難の中において平和を保つことである。」と言っています。
I’d like to share another story with you from a persecuted believer in India who counts it all joy to endure trials for the sake of Christ.
次に、インドにいる別の信者のお話をしたいと思います。この信者もまた迫害を受けていますが、キリストのために試練に耐えることを史上の喜びだと考えています。

Conclusion
結論
We are called to respond to trials and persecution with the deep joy we have in Christ. It’s countercultural to have joy in the midst of trials, but this is part of what makes us distinct and set apart.
キリストにおいて得られる深い喜びをもって試練と迫害に応戦することが、私たちの使命です。試練の最中でも喜びを持つということは、一般的なものとは異なる考え方だと言えますが、こうすることで私たちは特別な、良い意味で出る杭のような存在になれます。
Our joy isn’t based on our circumstances, our material possessions or our health. Our joy runs deeper than that. It runs directly to the Creator and Sustainer of the Universe and the Author and Perfecter of our faith.
私たちの喜びは、私たちを取り巻く環境や、物質的に所有物や、健康状態に基づくものではありません。私たちの喜びはそれよりも深いものです。私達の喜びは、森羅万象を創造し、私たちの信仰を造り上げ、それを完成された方に直接繋がるものです。
And during our trials and persecution, we’re not alone. We are part of the Body of Christ. And as the global Body of Christ, we’re also called to deep prayer and action on behalf of our brothers and sisters who suffer for the faith we share.
そして、私たちが試練と迫害を受けている間でも、私たちは一人ではありません。私たちはキリストのからだの一部です。私たちは地球規模でもキリストのからだの一部ですから、信仰のために苦しんでいる兄弟姉妹のために、深い祈りと行動を捧げることが求められます。
Today, I want to call on you to make praying for the persecuted church part of your DNA as a believer.
今日は、迫害された教会が自分のDNAの一部であるかのように皆さんに祈って欲しいのです。
In 1 Corinthians 12:26, Paul writes about the unity of the Body of Christ and says, “If one member suffers, all suffer together.” Let that sink in for a moment.
コリント第一12章26節で、パウロはキリストのからだの一致について次のように書いています。「もし一つの肢体が悩めば、ほかの肢体もみな共に悩み、一つの肢体が尊ばれると、ほかの肢体もみな共に喜ぶ。」
If one member suffers, all the members suffer. Have you ever thought about Christian persecution that way? When your fellow believers are suffering, you—as a member of the same Body—suffer with them. You share their grief, mourning the loss of their freedom, their family, their job—whatever the situation might be. You grieve and you pray.
1人が苦しむと、みんなが苦しみます。クリスチャンの迫害についてそのように考えたことはありますか？あなたの仲間である信者が苦しんでいるとき、あなたは同じ体の器官として彼らと同じように苦しんでいるということなのです。例えどんな状況であろうと、彼らの悲しみを分かち合い、彼らが自由、家族、仕事を失ったことをともに嘆き、悲しみ、祈ってください。
As one church and one Body, we need to learn how to suffer together and to rejoice together. Today, there are believers around the world who are asking for our prayers—so they’ll have strength to stand strong in violent or oppressive persecution.
一つの教会として、一つの体として、私たちは、どうすれば一緒に苦しみ、一緒に喜ぶことができるのかを学ぶ必要があります。今日、私たちの祈りを求めている信者が世界中にたくさんいます。私たちが祈れば、彼らは暴力と抑圧に満ちた迫害に強く立ち向かう力を持つことができます。
You and I should be ready for our own trials and persecution, but we should also be on our knees now for the global suffering church today.
皆さんは、自分の試練と迫害について心の準備ができていると思いますが、今日はここで、世界中で苦しんでいる教会のために、ひざまずき祈りましょう。

We have forms printed out for you to write an encouragement letter to a suffering believer in India today. One of the most prominent requests from believers who are suffering is prayer and encouragement. Take one of these, fill it out and leave it with us. It will be sent to believers in India through the organization Open Doors.
