Introduction
Like so many of our Christian traditions, Pentecost has its origins in Judaism. The Feast of Pentecost, or the Festival of Weeks (Shavuot, in Hebrew), is one of the three (3) main feasts celebrated in the Jewish year. It takes place 50 days after Passover (Leviticus 23:15~16). The feast is designed to offer God the first fruits of the new grain harvest.
多くのクリスチャンの伝統と同様に、ペンテコステの由来もユダヤ教にあります。ペンテコステの祝日、または七週の祭り、ヘブライ語では「シャブオット」と言いますが、これは過越祭から50日後に祝う三大祝日の一つです。祝宴は神様に新しい収穫の最初の成果を捧げるために行われます。
The English word ‘Pentecost’ is a transliteration of the Greek word pentekostes, which means ‘fifty.’ It comes from the ancient Christian expression pentekoste hemera, which means ’50th day.’
「ペンテコステ」という英単語はギリシア語のペンテコステスに由来し、その意味は古代クリスチャンの表現である「ペンテコステヘメラ」つまり「50日目」を意味します。
In Acts 2, we are told the story of Pentecost and the birth of the early church. Already gathered together in order to celebrate the feast, the Apostles heard “a sound like the blowing of a violent wind” come from heaven and fill the house where they were assembled. Next, they saw what appeared to be tongues of fire rest on each one of them. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages they did not know. The combination of the wind and the different languages being spoken drew a “crowd” who stood amazed as the apostles told them of the wonders of God, in their own native tongues!
使徒の働き2章では、ペンテコステと初代教会の誕生の話が書かれています。祝祭を祝うために集まっていた弟子たちは「激しい風が吹きつける音」が天から聞こえ、それは彼らが集まっていた場所に満ち渡りました。次に、めらめら燃える炎の舌のようなものが現れ、みなの頭上にとどまりました。 その場にいた人たちは、みな聖霊に満たされ、知りもしない外国語で話し始めたではありませんか。激しい風と様々な言語の組み合わせは、神の奇跡を各々の母国語で話し始めた使徒たちに驚いた”群衆”を表しています。
Next, Peter gets up and explains what is happening in the context of Scripture. He recites a passage from the book of Joel which explains how God is going to send the Holy Spirit and pour it out on all flesh—men and women, Jews and Gentiles, old and young. Then he talks about Jesus, who recently died and rose again. Again using Scripture the crowd would have been familiar with (passages from the Psalms of David), he shows how God’s word foretold Jesus’ coming to earth, His death, and His resurrection. About 3,000 people received Peter’s words and were baptized that day.
次にペテロが立って、聖書を引用しながらその出来事を説明しました。いま見ていることは、何世紀も前に、まさに預言者ヨエルが預言したことだと言いました。『神は言われる。終わりの日に、わたしはすべての人にわたしの霊を注ぐ。その時、あなたがたの息子、娘は預言し、青年は幻を見、老人は夢を見る。 聖霊は、男女を問わず、わたしに仕える者たちに注がれる。すると、彼らは預言をする。』
また、詩編にあるダビデ王の言葉も引用して、ダビデ王がイエス様が天から降りて来られることを予言しました。すると、その日のうちに3000人もの人がペテロの言葉を受け入れて洗礼を受けました。
A few things stick out about the day of Pentecost described in Acts 2. These are some the lessons from Pentecost.
使徒の働き2章で特に気がつくことがいくつがあります。ペンテコステから学べることを見てみましょう。

The Holy Spirit came when believers were gathered together – Acts 2:1
聖霊は信者たちがともに集まっていたときに舞い降りた（使徒の働き2章1節）
1 “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.”
Amazing things happen when the children of God gather together. The followers of our Lord Jesus were positioned to receive God’s gift of the Holy Spirit. They heeded the Lord’s command not to leave Jerusalem (Acts 1:4). After His ascension to heaven, the disciples went to the upper room (Acts 1:13) and “they all joined together constantly in prayer” (Acts 1:14). Their number was about 120 (Acts 1:15).
「五旬節（ユダヤ教の祭りの一つ）の日のことです。信者たちが一堂に集まっていると」使徒の働き2:1
神様を信じる人々が一緒に集まると素晴らしいことが起こります。ここでも、イエス様の弟子たちが精霊を受けようとしていました。彼らはエルサレムを離れないようにという主の命令を聞き入れ ました(使徒の働き1:4)。イエス様が天に召された後も、屋上の間に行き、（使徒の働き1:13）定期的に祈りのために集まっていました（使徒の働き1:14）。その数は120人ほどでした。(使徒の働き1:15)
Apparently, the other instances recorded in the book of Acts point to the same pattern. The Holy Spirit came in the context of a gathering. For example, in Samaria (Acts 8:14~17); to the Gentile audience in Caesarea (Acts 10:44~45); and, to a group in Ephesus (Acts 19:1~7).
使徒の働きに記録されている他の場面でも同じようなことが描かれています。精霊は人が集まっていたときに降臨しました。例えば、サマリア（使徒の働き8:14-17)カイサリアの異教徒(使徒の働き10:44-45)とエフェソスの一団のところです。（使徒の働き19:1-7)
Some will argue that the Holy Spirit is sovereign and He will do as He pleases. I agree. But, the collective expression of faith in prayer and the gathering in His name, accentuate the atmosphere whereby He is expected to powerfully manifest Himself as He did in the past.
精霊が主導を握り、望みの通りに動くと言う人がいます。確かにそうです。しかし、使徒の働きで描かれているように、信仰を持って、集まって祈る状況を作ると、その場に精霊が降臨すると私は信じています。
There’s a story about the great Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, the first to discover the magnetic meridian of the North Pole and to discover the South Pole. On one of his trips, Amundsen took a homing pigeon with him. When he had finally reached the top of the world, he opened the bird’s cage and set it free. Imagine the delight of Amundsen’s wife, back in Norway, when she looked up from the doorway of her home and saw the pigeon circling in the sky above. No doubt she exclaimed, “He’s alive! My husband is still alive!”
北極の磁気子午線と南極を発見したノルウェー人の偉大な探検家であったロアルド・アムンゼンについて面白い話があります。ある日旅に出かけたときに彼は伝書鳩を一緒に連れて行きました。世界の最高地点に立った時彼は鳩をおりから放しました。ノルウェーの自宅にいた彼の妻がその鳩を空にみた時どんなに喜んでいたかを想像してください。間違いなく彼女は「生きている！私の夫はまだ生きている」と叫んだでしょう。
So it was when Jesus ascended. He was gone, but the disciples clung to His promise to send them the Holy Spirit. They waited patiently together. What joy, then, when the dovelike Holy Spirit descended at Pentecost. The disciples had with them the continual reminder that Jesus was alive and victorious at the right of the Father. This continues to be the Spirit’s message.
イエス様が昇天した時も同じでした。イエス様はいなくなりましたが、精霊を必ず送るという約束を弟子たちは信じ続けていました。一緒に辛抱強く待っていたのです。ペンテコステの日に精霊が鳩のように降臨した時、彼らもどんなに喜んでいたことでしょう。イエス様は父である神様のもとで生きていることを確信したのです。これは精霊が今でも私たちに伝えているメッセージです。

The Holy Spirit birthed and empowered the church – Acts 2:4, 11
精霊が教会を誕生させ、力を与えた（使徒の働き2章4節、11節）
4 “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”
11 “…we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”
4その場にいた人たちは、みな聖霊に満たされ、知りもしない外国語で話し始めたではありませんか。聖霊が、それだけの力を与えてくださったのです。
11それぞれの出身地のことばで、神のすばらしい奇跡の話を聞くとは
Though spiritual rebirth is the common experience of every true believer in Jesus Christ, the Bible passage does not specifically mention that the church was born on the Day of Pentecost. However, it pictures a major shift in the life of the disciples from this point forward. They were filled with the Holy Spirit. They were changed and supernaturally enabled. They were empowered. The once fearful followers became bold proclaimers of the gospel. From this point forward, they never turned back even in the face of opposition and persecution.
信者たちは、イエス・キリストを信じることで霊的に生まれ変わるのを経験しますが、この聖書の箇所では、教会がこの日に誕生したと書かれていません。しかし、この時点から弟子たちの人生が大きく変わりました。彼らは精霊に満たされました。彼らは超自然的な力を持つようになりました。彼らに力が与えられました。かつては臆病でありましたが、大胆に福音を宣べ伝えるようになりました。彼らは迫害に遭っても、決して以前の自分に戻ることはありませんでした。
Following the original intent of the feast of Pentecost, which was to offer to God the firstfruits of the harvest, the Apostles offered the firstfruits of their ministry that day. They would go on to lead many more to Christ—in other nations and among other tribes and tongues. Their work would not have been possible if it hadn’t been for the supernatural equipping of the Holy Spirit.
ペテンコステ祭の伝統であった「最初の収穫物を神様に捧げる」という慣例に従い、使徒たちもその日ミニストリーで最初に得たものを神様に捧げました。彼らは他の国でも、他の部族でも、他の言語を話していた人々の中でも神の言葉を宣べ伝え、多くの人をキリストのもとへと誘いました。この素晴らしい活動は精霊に満たされなければできなかったことに違いないでしょう。

The Holy Spirit empowered the church for witness – Acts 2:14, 21, 40
聖霊は目撃する者のために教会に力を与えた（使徒の働き2章１４、２１、４０節）
14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. // 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ // 40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”
14 するとペテロが、十一人の使徒と共につかつかと進み出て、声を張り上げ、人々に語りかけました。「よそから来られた方も、エルサレムに住んでおられる皆さんも、どうぞお聞きください。
21 しかし、主にあわれみを求める者はみな、あわれみを受けて救われる
40 このあとも、ペテロの説教はえんえんと続きました。イエスのことや、悪に満ちたこの時代から救われなければならないことを、ことばを尽くして訴えたのです。
Peter’s message is the first example we are given of an early-church sermon inviting others to join the Kingdom of God. He explained prophetic Scriptures, warned them of the coming judgment and pleaded with them to turn to God for salvation.
ペトロのメッセージは「神の御国」へ人々を招き入れる初代教会の説教の最初の例です。彼は聖書の予言を説明し、来る審判について警告し、自らが救済されるよう神様のもとへとへ戻ることを強くお願いしました。
While the Holy Spirit worked powerfully in the Old Testament and also manifested Himself while Jesus was on the earth in human form, this is the first time we see the Holy Spirit dwell among people.
もちろん、精霊は旧約聖書の時代にもその働きを示し、イエス様が地球上にいた時にも働きかけていましたが、人々の間での精霊を目にすることができたのはこれが初めてでした。
Apart from Jesus Himself, prior to this infilling of the Holy Spirit, mass conversions of this magnitude would not have been possible. Pentecost is to remind us that the Holy Spirit supernaturally equips us to reach the lost.
Moody was to have an evangelistic campaign in England. An elderly pastor protested, “Why do we need this ‘Mr. Moody’? He’s uneducated, inexperienced, etc. Who does he think he is anyway? Does he think he has a monopoly on the Holy Spirit?” A younger, wiser pastor rose and responded, “No, but the Holy Spirit has a monopoly on Mr. Moody.”
イエス様を除いて、聖霊降臨以前にこれほどの規模の改宗が起こることは有り得ませんでした。ペンテコステの日に起こったことは、精霊が私たちを超自然的な力で満たして、迷える人々を助けるように働きかけていることを伝えています。
ムーディさんというある男性は、イギリスで福音を伝えるイベントを行う予定でした。それを聞いた年配の牧師さんが抗議しました。「なぜムーディ氏である必要がある？彼は無学で経験を積んでいない人物です。自分がどんな人か分かっているのだろうか。精霊を独り占めしているとでも思っているのか。」すると、若くて聡明な牧師がこのように返事をしました。「いいえ、でも精霊がムーディさんを独り占めしているのです。」
Conclusion
Today, we are reminded that we need to be active, participating members of Christ’s body. Imagine if you were a part of the group gathered “together in one place” (v.1), but had decided to stay home that day. You would have missed such an amazing work of God among them.
今日のメッセージから、私たちは教会に積極的に参加するメンバーでいるべきことを理解できたと思います。「一緒に同じ場所に集まっていた」はずなのに、家にいてしまったと想像してください。神様の素晴らしい出来事を見逃してしまいます。
Lord-willing, when we get the opportunity to regather, it will be awesome to see everyone doing their fair share in rebuilding and strengthening our community. Without holding back, let us employ our Spirit-given gifts, to help each other grow to maturity.
神様の御旨なら、今度一緒に集まる機会ができたときに、皆さんが協力してこの教会という共同体を強いものにする様子を見ることができたら素晴らしいですね。精霊に頂いた様々な賜物をお互いを助けるために用いましょう。
God has put us together as a family of faith to equip us and empower us for ministry. Additionally, it has been a part of the Church’s DNA from day one to reach those of different tribes, tongues and customs. This can be done only through the supernatural equipping of the Holy Spirit. Thank God for Pentecost. Thank God for His gift of the Spirit. Let Him take monopoly of us.
神様は、私たちが教会への奉仕に全力を捧げることができるよう、信仰の家族として私たちを結びつけてくれているのです。
文化や言葉や習慣が異なる人々を箕面国際教会に導いていることは、この教会のDNAがなしている業だと思います。これは精霊の超自然的な働きにしか思えません。ペンテコステ祭のために神様に感謝しましょう。精霊を与えて下さったことを神様に感謝しましょう。そして、神様に私たちを独り占めにしてもらいましょう。
