I believe it was to reveal the Father. The purpose of everything that Jesus did was to reveal the love and mercy of the Father to a hurting and broken world. Jesus said,
父なる神を明らかにするためだと私は信じています。イエスがなさったことすべての目的は、父なる神の愛と憐れみを傷ついた壊れた世界に明らかにするためでした。イエスはこう言いました、
Through Jesus, the love, the kindness, the patience, the mercy, the grace, the gentleness, the goodness and the power of the Father was revealed.

Our purpose, as Christians, is to continue the ministry of Jesus. Our purpose as a church is to continue the ministry of Jesus. The greatest thing we can do in our lives and in our church is to continue to reveal the Father to a hurting and broken world.

Bradley spoke about this in his sermon last week when he said that we are the only gospel that most people will read, and we are the only Jesus that most people will meet. It’s true. For most people we meet, outside of nature, we are the only avenue through which the love and the power of Father will be revealed to them.

We can learn how to reveal the Father to others, and we can learn how to avoid the pitfalls of this, by looking at three happenings in Luke 9. These three happenings arise following the mission which Jesus sent his twelve disciples out on. It says in verse 1 that Jesus sent the disciples out, giving them authority and power to drive out demons, to heal the sick and to proclaim the Kingdom of God.

It’s amazing to think that such ordinary, unlearned people could be given such extraordinary power. But that is what they received and that is why they were able to perform such amazing miracles while on mission. They raved about the results when they got back. Having then not only seen first hand in Jesus, but participated themselves in such powerful manifestations of the Father, how did that affect them?

In verse 46 it says,
They began to compare between themselves the results of their mission work and this led to pride. They began to argue over who was the most important, who was closest to Jesus, and who had performed the greatest miracles.
弟子たちは自分たちの宣教のはたらきの結果を比べ合い出したので、それがプライドをもたらす原因となってしまいました。誰がいちばん重要で、誰がいちばんイエスに近く、誰がいちばんすばらしい奇跡を行ったかを議論するようになりました。
Here in our church, Pastor Mike leads the praise and worship, Imee leads the Sunday School, Kim-san leads our lunch ministry, and JL mops the floor so that none of you have things clinging to your feet. I want to ask you, whose work really is the most important? But this is simply the wrong question, and even asking it suggests that there is something very wrong.

Paul gives a very apt analogy using the human body. Let me ask you, what’s more important to you, a) your heart, b) your brain, c) your kidney or d) your anus? Some parts might have more dignity than others, but asking which one is the most important suggests that there is something wrong with your understanding of human anatomy. You’ll die if any one of those goes missing.

There needs to be a deep and abiding sense of love and value for every part of the church body.

御国を力強く現すことに関与して妬みが生まれた
Later in the same chapter – Luke chapter 9 – John said,
同じ章のルカの福音書9章の後で、ヨハネはこう言っています。
Here we see the disciples fall into the trap of personal Kingdom building. Envy. It’s as though they’re trying to maintain a franchise on godly power and will do whatever it takes to exclude all others. They’re saying “Okay, we get it, no one of us is better than another within our group, but we’re certainly better than that outsider.” They saw outsider believers as a threat to their kingdom position.
ここで弟子たちが自分たちの御国を建てるというわなに陥っているのが分かります。それは妬みです。神の力をフランチャイズ化しようとして、仲間でない者たちを締め出そうと必死になっています。彼らは、“分かりました。私たちの間ではある人が他の人に優るということはありません。ですが、私たちは外部の者よりは確かに優っています”と言っているのです。彼らには外部の信者が彼らの御国の地位を脅かすものに見えたのです。
How about you? If you’re serving, for example, in the praise and worship ministry and someone new comes in from outside our church who is humble, has a heart and talent for worship, and sings like an angel, will you cling to your position in the worship team because you were here first, or will you be happy to share your ministry with another or even allow yourself to be replaced by another?
あなたならどうでしょうか？例えばもしあなたが賛美のミニストリーで奉仕していたとします。そこへ教会の外部から謙虚で、賛美を愛し才能があり、天使のように歌う人が来たとしたら、自分が先にいるからといってワーシップチームの自分の座にい続けようとしますか？それとも喜んで他の人と自分のミニストリーを分かち合う、または他の人にゆずるろうとしますか？
I wonder if a world class chef with a heart for lunch ministry came into our church and wanted to help with the lunch ministry, if Kim-san would embrace them or feel envy? I’m sure she would embrace them and be glad for their help.

What if a world class mopper came in with a passion for the cleaning ministry. Can you see JL holding on to that mop for dear life and fighting the invader off? Not likely. I’m sure JL would be happy for the company and the support, and would even be willing to be replaced if God had other ministry work him.
世界一流のモップ掃除の達人がお掃除ミニストリーに強く引かれてやってきたとしたらどうでしょう？JLさんが必死でモップにしがみつき、侵入者を追い払っている姿が想像できますか？ありえないでしょう？JLさんはいっしょに掃除をしてくれる人が来てくれて嬉しくて、神様が他のミニストリーのはたらきを与えてくださったら、喜んで変わってもらうことでしょう。
If someone else is infringing on what we perceive to be our spiritual turf, there’s no room for envy. There is a need for order and a right way of going about serving together. But in Christ, there’s no room for envy or personal Kingdom building.
他の誰かが私たちの得意分野であるとみなしていることに侵害しているとしても、そこに妬みの余地はありません。秩序というものが必要で、ともに仕える正しい方法が要るのです。しかしキリストにあって妬みや個人の御国を建てあげる余地はありません。

Participation in powerful Kingdom manifestations produced murderous thoughts
御国を力強く現すことに関与して殺意が生まれた
When people don’t respond to your ministry efforts, how does it make you feel? Rejected? Sad? Angry? Embarrassed? The disciples here were so incensed by being rejected that they wanted to call down fire on an entire city. A spirit of murder is now functioning in the disciples to the point where they actually want to kill people. And to make it even worse, they are using a misunderstanding of an Old Testament event to justify their actions. We do this sometimes, don’t we? We misuse the Bible to justify things that we know are wrong.
あなたのミニストリーの努力に人が反応してくれなかったら、どう感じますか？拒否されたと感じますか？悲しいですか？腹が立ちますか？恥ずかしいですか？弟子たちは拒否されたことであまりにも激怒して町全体に火を呼び下したいほどでした。実際に人を殺してしまいたいという殺意が弟子たちのうちにはたらいているのです。さらにひどいことには、自分たちの行動を正当化しようと旧約聖書の出来事を誤って使っているのです。私たちも時々、同じことをしませんか？間違っていると分かっていることを正当化しようとして聖書を誤用するのです。
None of these three responses of the disciples, after experiencing such amazing works of God, reveal the heart of the Father. In fact, they seriously misrepresent the Father. Where they should have been humbled, inclusive and forgiving, they were proud, envious and angry. No wonder there are cartoons like this: [“Please Jesus, protect me from your followers.”]

By all accounts, this ministry experiment of Jesus’ was a miserable failure. Though the disciples did great works, it seems that in their character they learned nothing at all. They should have gone away and meditated on 1 Corinthians 13 (all about love), even though it hadn’t been written then!:)

The disciples did such a poor job of joining in Jesus’ ministry, what can we learn from this, other than what not to do? Well, as always, we can learn an awful lot by looking at Jesus. Because in all three of these situations (as with all situations) Jesus revealed the love and the mercy of the Father.
弟子たちはイエスの宣教にうまく加わることができませんでした。してはいけないこと以外に、私たちはここから何を学べるでしょうか？いつものごとく、イエスを見ることによってたくさんのことが学べます。なぜならこれら3つの出来事すべてにおいて（すべての状況においてもそうですが）イエスが父なる神の愛と憐れみを明らかにしているからです。
When the disciples were squabbling over who was the greatest, Jesus didn’t get angry with them, abuse them, whack them or fire them. He taught them in love. He gently corrected them. He took a child and stood him in front of them all and said,
弟子たちが誰がいちばん偉いかとつまらない口論をしている時、イエスは彼らに腹を立てず、彼らを罵ることもせず、ぶったたくこともせず、首にすることもしませんでした。イエスは愛をもって教えました。優しく正しました。子どもの手を取り、彼らの前に立たせてこう言いました。
What a powerful lesson! Even in discipline, Jesus revealed the Father’s love.
なんと説得力のあるレッスンでしょう。正している時でさえ、イエスは父なる神の愛を示しています。
When the disciples were trying to stop others from doing their work, again Jesus didn’t make a sarcastic comment, give them the silent treatment or whip them with a rubber hose. He gently taught them, saying,
弟子たちが他の人たちがしようとしていることをやめさせようとしている時も、イエスは皮肉なコメントをしたり、無視したり、ゴムホースでむち打ったりしませんでした。イエスは優しく教え、こう言いました。
When the disciples wanted to see an entire city killed because their feelings were put out, it seems Jesus was a little more assertive in His response, and you might expect this. It simply says that he turned and rebuked them, and then they went on to another village. (v55,56)
気を悪くした弟子たちが町全体の人たちが殺されるのを見たがった時、イエスの反応は少し主張が強くなっているように思えます。それは当然だと思うかもしれません。イエスは振り向いて、彼らを戒められた。そして一行は別の村に行ったと書いてあるだけです。
Jesus’ revealed the heart of the Father in each of these corrections. We should imitate Jesus in his actions and His heart, as we go about ministering together. We will all make mistakes. We will let our emotions get the better of us sometimes. Maybe we even feel like giving up sometimes. We need to gently correct and love and encourage and edify one another, just as Jesus did with His disciples. It goes without saying that we also need to allow ourselves to be corrected and loved and encouraged and edified by others when we are in error.
これらの戒めの一つ一つにイエスは父なる神の心を明らかにしています。宣教をともにする私たちはイエスの行為、心を真似するべきです。私たちはみな間違いを犯します。時々、感情が先に出てしまうこともあります。時々、あきらめたくなることさえあります。私たちはイエスが弟子たちにしたように、互いに優しく正し合い、愛し合い、励ましあい、教え導き合う必要があります。そして自分が間違っている時は、人に正してもらい、愛してもらい、励ましてもらい、教え導いてもらう必要があるということは言うまでもありません。
On a side note, there is a lot for parents to learn here about disciplining children. As we discipline our children we need to follow the example that Jesus set here. A few key principles:

Discipline should always be for the child’s benefit, not a release valve for the parent

Discipline should always be a planned corrective event, not an impulsive outburst

Discipline should always reveal the edifying heart of God, not the destructive heart of the enemy.
しつけはいつも神の教えの心を示すべきで、敵の破壊をもたらす心を示してはいけません。
Jesus revealed the Father’s heart in each of these corrections. He also revealed the Father’s heart after these corrections. Looking at the poor character development of the disciples, we might think of this mission as a failed experiment. But Jesus didn’t. In fact, he felt it was so important and worthwhile that shortly after he sent 72 disciples out on the same mission.
イエスは父なる神の心をそれぞれの戒めで明らかにしました。戒めの後でも明らかにしました。弟子たちの乏しい展開を見て、この宣教は失敗だったと思うかもしれません。しかしイエスはそうとは思いませんでした。実際、とても重要で価値あることなので、その後すぐ同じ宣教に72人を送り出しました。
Jesus is calling each of us to ministry and mission work right here in and from MIC. And I am convinced that a lot of growth and wonderful things lie ahead for MIC. I want us to pray for it, to expect it, to step out in faith for it, and to rejoice in it. But I also want us to prepare ourselves for what follows.
イエスは私たち一人ひとりをここMICでそしてMICからミニストリーに、宣教のはたらきに召しています。そしてMICには大きな成長とすばらしいことが前途に待ち受けていると私は確信しています。そのために祈り、期待し、信仰をもって一歩踏み出し、そのことを喜んでいきましょう。しかしその後に続くことにも準備していてもらいたいのです。
Jesus has given us authority and power to do His work. We should pray that we can reveal God in every situation. We should reveal the loving heart of God in our success and the success of others, and we should reveal the loving heart of God in our failures and the failings of others.
イエスのはたらきをする権威と力をイエスは私たちに与えてくださいました。どんな状況にあっても神を明らかにできるように祈っていくべきです。私たちの成功において、他の人の成功において神の愛する心を明らかにできるように、そして私たちの失敗において、他の人の失敗においても神の愛する心を明らかにできるようにしましょう。
