Today we reach a milestone. After six years of studying each book of the Bible, today we arrive at the book of Revelation. Who was here on that chilly January morning in 2013 when we started in Genesis? It took us until August last year to complete our overview of the Old Testament, and after speeding things up this year, we arrive today at the end of God’s revealed Word.
今日はとても大切な学びについてお話しします。今まで、聖書の中の書を6年間学んできました。今日はいよいよ黙示録を読んでいきます。思い出してください。創世記で始まった2013年1月は、寒い冬でした。その６年前の寒い日にこの教会にいたのは誰でしょう。私たちは、旧約聖書の概要を学ぶために昨年8月までの長い年月が必要でしたが、今年は読むスピードを早めました。そして、今日やっと神が明言された言葉が書かれている、黙示録を読んでいきたいと思います。
But the book of Revelation is such a monumental book, we’re going to need 2 weeks just to complete an overview. Today I will give an introduction to the book and look at the letters of Jesus to the churches in chapters 2 and 3. Then next week we will look at the rest of the letter.
ヨハネの黙示録はいつの世にも残るような素晴らしい本です。私たちがそんな黙示録の概要をまとめるのには、今週と来週、2週間はかかると思います。ですから、今週は書の紹介をし、黙示録第2章と第3章のイエスの教会への手紙を見てみましょう。来週は手紙の残りの部分を見ていきます。
The purpose of the book of Revelation is to unveil a glorified Christ not only to our hearts but in our hearts.
黙示録が書かれた目的は、栄光を受けたキリストが姿を明かされたのは、私たちの心だけでなく、私たちの心の中にもキリストの栄光が明らかにされると言うことを伝えるためです。

Just as Jesus revealed the truth in parables and signs, so the book of Revelations reveals the truth of God in symbols, pictures, numbers and colours. To understand them we need to know our Old Testament well because almost every symbol and image that appears in Revelation has already appeared at some place in the Old Testament.
寓話と例え話を使ってイエスが真理を明かしたように、黙示録では、シンボルや、絵、数字や色で神の真理を伝えています。それらを理解するためには、旧約聖書をよく知る必要があります。なぜなら、ヨハネの黙示録に現れるほとんどすべてのシンボル、象徴とイメージは旧約聖書のある箇所にも、すでに記されているからです。
Yet what is revealed in Revelation is something greater than what was revealed before. Only the Holy Spirit can unveil Jesus to the hearts of believers. In the same way, we cannot understand the book of Revelation, or see the glory of Jesus revealed in it, without the unveiling work of the Holy Spirit. So we need to be humble and prayerful as we approach this book.
しかし黙示録には、今までに伝えられていたことよりももっと意味がありました。それは、信じている人の心には、聖霊のみがイエスのことを告げることができるということです。聖霊の働きをなくしては、私たちは黙示録の書をこのように理解することはできません、または聖霊の働きなしには、イエスの栄光の現れを見ることはできません。ですから、私たちはこの黙示録を読む時は謙虚になり祈ることが必要なのです。

The book of Revelation was written by the apostle John toward the end of his life, either around 64-68AD or 92-95AD. More importantly than when it was written, is to whom it was written. This book is the Revelation of God to every church, to every believer of Jesus, in every age. It is the Revelation of God to you and me.
黙示録の本は、使徒ヨハネが自らの人生を終える紀元後64-68年頃か92-95年頃に書きました。しかし、いつ書かれたのかというよりももっと大切なのは、それが誰に向けて書かれたのかということです。この書はすべての教会、すべての時代にイエスのあらゆる信者にとっての神の啓示です。それはあなたと私にとって、神が私たちに明言されたた言葉、神の啓示なのです。
The description of the glorified Jesus in chapter 1 is amazing, and it gives us a glimpse of the Jesus we will encounter when we go to heaven. John describes the figure he saw before him.
第1章での、栄光を現されたイエスの記述はすばらしく、天国で出会えるイエスの姿を垣間見ることができます。ヨハネは彼が見た、彼の目の前に立つイエスの姿を次のように表現しています。
Already, this image is loaded with symbolism. The lampstands represent the churches and they are also a symbol of the burning presence of Jesus. Their gold colour represents a purified and holy church. By tending the lampstands Jesus fills them with the fresh oil of the Holy Spirit.
このようにイエスを表現しているイメージはとても象徴的です。燭台は教会を表しており、イエスという燃える存在を象徴しています。彼らの言う金色は浄化された聖なる教会を表しています。燭台を傾けることによって、イエスは聖霊の新鮮な油で教会を満たします。
The golden sash represents the compassionate love Jesus has for the church, His bride. The head speaks of Christ’s authority and the whiteness of the hair represents the righteousness of God, as well as wisdom and justice. This is similar to the figure recorded in Daniel 7:9, therefore equating Jesus with God, the Ancient of Days.
黄金のタスキのようなものは、イエス・キリストが教会に向けて抱いて（いだいて）いる誇りと思いやりのある愛を表しています。イエスの頭はキリストの権威を語り、イエスの髪の白さは、神の義と知恵と正義を表しています。これは、ダニエル書7：9にも似たようなことが書かれています。それゆえ、旧約聖書に書かれている全能の神をイエスだとみなして良いと言えます。
The bronze of His feet represents judgement. Jesus has gone through judgement for our sins. The sound of rushing waters represents the voices of a multitude (Rev 17:15) coming into His likeness. (Rev 14:1-3) The sword from His mouth is the Word of God (Heb 4:12)
イエスの足の青銅は判断を表します。イエスは私たち人間の罪のために裁きを受けました。流れているたくさんの水の音は、群衆の声、多くの人（Rev 17:15）がイエスを好意的に見ていることを表しています。（Rev 14：1-3）イエスの口から出る神の言葉は戦いの剣となります。（ヘブル4:12）
As you can see, even this one short passage, is filled with meaning. A detailed study of the whole book of Revelation will reveal all sorts of glories related to our triune God: God the Father, Jesus His Son and the Holy Spirit.
お分かりのように、この短い一節でさえ、たくさんの意味が含まれています。黙示録全体を詳しく学ぶと、私たちの三位一体の神に関係するすべての栄光、すなわち父なる神、御子イエス、そして聖霊のことがよくわかります。
Chapters 2 and 3 contain seven letters, one to each of the seven churches in (what is today) western Turkey. These seven churches represent all the churches of Christ (seven is a number representing wholeness or completion).
第2章と第3章には、現在のトルコ西部にある7つの教会に宛てられた、それぞれ7通の手紙が含まれています。7という数字は、全てまたは完結と言う意味を表す数字ですが、これらの7つの教会はキリストのすべての教会と言うことを表しています。
Each of these letters includes a word of commendation (except two), a word of warning or rebuke (except for two), a word of exhortation and a word of reward. We’re going to read across the letters and look at all the words of commendation together, then all the words of warning or rebuke together, then all the words of exhortation together, then finally all the words of reward together.
これらの手紙のそれぞれには、称賛の言葉、警告と叱責の言葉、奨励の言葉、報いの言葉書かれています。それでは、私たちは、称賛の言葉を一緒に読み、その後警告と叱責の言葉、次に奨励の言葉、最後にすべての報いの言葉を一緒に読んでいきましょう。

Take a moment to look at these commendations (or lack of). Take a moment to pray through these. Which one(s) do you think apply to you? What commendations do you think Jesus would have for you if He appeared before you now? Don’t be overly harsh – that’s false humility; and don’t be too lax – that would be prideful. Try to be as honest as possible with yourself, and prayerfully allow the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts in this.

Ephesus had abandoned the first love they had for Jesus. (2:4)

Pergamum was holding on to false teachings and practicing immorality (these two were related) (2:14)

Sardis was resting on a good reputation but really were spiritually dead. (3:1)

Laodicea were neither apathetic nor passionate, but just lukewarm, and this was detestable to God. (3:15,16)

Take a moment to look at these rebukes (or lack of). Take a moment to pray through them. Which one(s) do you think apply to you? What rebuke do you think Jesus might have for you if He appeared before you now? Try to be as honest as possible with yourself, and prayerfully allow the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts in this.

Ephesus: repent and listen carefully to what the Spirit is saying. (2:5,7)

Smyrna: remain faithful and listen carefully to what the Spirit is saying. (2:10,11)

Take a moment to look at these exhortations. I don’t know if I’m just incredible insightful, but there seems to be a pattern in these exhortations. Every one of them finishes with the same urging: listen carefully to what the Spirit is saying. This is a message that was recently emphasised in our study of The Parable of the Sower. ‘Listen carefully’ is a regular exhortation in the Bible and we need to heed it in our lives.
Take a moment to pray through these exhortations. Which one(s) do you think apply to you? What exhortation do you think Jesus might have for you if He appeared before you now? Try to be as honest as possible with yourself, and prayerfully allow the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts in this.

These are the words of the risen and glorified Jesus to us.

These are the words of Jesus who died, was buried, and three days later rose from the dead.
These are the words of Jesus who sent His Holy Spirit at Pentecost and birthed the church.
These are the words of Jesus who is the resurrection and the life.
They are true and they are wonderful.
これらは、死んで埋葬され、3日後に死から生き返ったイエスの言葉です。
これらは、降臨祭に聖霊を送って教会を作ったイエスの言葉です。
これらは、復活であり生命であるイエスの言葉です。
これらは真実であり、素晴らしいことです。
Let’s use these words to be encouraged, to grow in our faith and to love Jesus more.
