Introduction
Our Lord Jesus Christ said,
私たちの主イエス・キリストはバプテスマのヨハネについて次のように言われました。
What made John the Baptist great? As a religious worker, he had none of the marks we associate with success – no books, no buildings, no big budget, no delightful sermons.
バプテスマのヨハネはなぜそんなにも偉大だったのでしょうか？宗教者としての彼の働きを見ても、私たちがヨハネを偉大だと思わせるような証はどこにも見当たりません。彼は、書を書いたわけでもありませんし、立派な建物を建てたわけでもありません。経済に長けていたわけでもありませんし、ましてや素晴らしい説教を説いたわけでもありません。
In fact, his message was simple and often confrontational. Not only that, he was a hermit, had an unusual diet of locusts and honey, and … well, peculiar.
実際、ヨハネの説教は簡単でシンプルなものですが、しばしば衝突を招きかねないような、対立的な話を説いていました。それだけでなく、彼は世捨て人であり、イナゴとハチミツを食べると言う珍しい食生活をしていた変な人物でした。
But, as we examine his life and ministry, we will find that he is indeed great. He’s humble, pure, diligent, vulnerable and many more. He is a true prophet of God and his message still rings true even today.
しかし、私たちがヨハネの人生と彼の宣教活動を調べていくと、彼が本当に偉大であることがわかります。彼は謙虚で、純粋で、勤勉で、心が傷つきやすく、そして他にもたくさんの言葉で彼を表現することができます。彼は神の真の預言者であり、彼のメッセージは今日（こんにち）でも真実を述べています。

Looking at John’s beginnings
ヨハネ書の序説
To understand this man of God, it’s important that we look back at John’s personal history.
ヨハネ書の序説を読んでみましょう。神の子であるヨハネを理解するには、彼の個人的な歴史を振り返ることが大切です。

John’s world at birth
ヨハネの誕生
God revealed Himself to the Israelites in different ways, but most commonly through the prophets. The prophets were God’s messengers, especially selected to proclaim His words.
神はさまざまな方法で、イスラエル人にご自身をお見せになりましたが、最も一般的に知られているのは、預言者を通して神ご自身を明らかにされました。預言者は神の使いであり、特に神の言葉を伝えるために選ばれました。
However, at the time of John’s birth, it’s been a long time since God communicated through a prophet. The last one was through the prophet Malachi, the last book of the Old Testament (OT) appropriately bears his name. It was 400 years ago!
しかし、ヨハネが誕生した時には、すでに長きに渡って預言者を通して神の言葉が伝えられていました。最後の神の言葉は、預言者マラキを通してでした。旧約聖書の最後にあるマラキ書には、ちゃんとヨハネの名前が登場しています。 400年も前に書かれているのにです！
With no fresh revelation from the Lord, religion in John’s day had gone stale. The Book of the Law, which God gave through Moses seemed outdated and the religious leaders of the day were bent on making their own ideas of righteousness as the gold standard.
ヨハネの時代になると、主からの新たな啓示があまりなかったため、宗教は古くなっていました。神がモーセを通して与えられた律法の書は時代遅れとなっていき、その時代の宗教指導者たちは、それぞれ自分の義を良い基準とすることに夢中になっていました。
Their interpretations of the Law were elevated as if they’re genuinely God’s word. In short, man’s traditions had contaminated God’s truth, leaving the people with such spiritual hunger and thirst.
当時の指導者たちは勝手な法の解釈をし、まるで彼らの言葉が、神の言葉であるかのように高められました。要するに、人間が作り上げたそのような慣習が、神の真実を汚してしまい、人々に霊的な飢えと渇きを残してしまいました。
The secular scene was similarly depressing. Israel was ruled by power-hungry tyrants. John’s birth came toward the end of Herod the Great’s reign, who was well-known for his huge buildings as well as his violence.
世間も同様に、暗い時代となりました。イスラエルは権力に飢えた暴君に支配されていました。ヘロデ大王の治世の終わりにヨハネは誕生しました。ヘロデ大王は、巨大な城を築いたことと暴力的なことで有名な王でした。

John’s parents
ヨハネの両親
While Herod was diabolically murdering his own sons, whom he perceived as rivals to the throne, an aging priest and his wife were longing to have their own child.
ヘロデが自分の息子を王位争いのライバルと見なし、悪魔のように我が息子を殺害しようとしている時、自分たちの子どもが欲しいと切望していた、とある老いた司祭とその妻がいました。
The Bible describes this couple, Zechariah and Elizabeth, in this way:
聖書はこの夫婦、ザカリヤとエリザベスを次のように説明しています。
And yet this godly pair had no children. Every barren woman can understand Elizabeth’s silent sorrow as time diminished her hopes of pregnancy.
それでも、この敬虔な夫婦には子どもがいませんでした。不妊症の女性は皆、エリザベスの沈黙の悲しみを理解することができるでしょう。時が経てば経つほど、妊娠の希望が薄れていきます。
But, barrenness also fits in God’s plan (for example, Sarah, Rachel & Hannah).
しかし、「不妊」ということは神の計画でもあったのです。（たとえば、サラ、ラケル、ハンナのように）
Until … The angel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah. He was tasked to make incense offering in the temple at the time.
天使ガブリエルがザカリヤに姿を表すまでは「不妊」ということは神の計画でした。当時、司祭であるザカリヤは神殿で香を捧げ続けるようにと命じられていました。
God answered not only Zechariah’s prayers for the salvation of Israel, but also his desire for a son. He literally couldn’t believe what the angel said:
神は、ザカリヤのイスラエルの救済を願う祈りだけでなく、彼の息子を欲しいと言う願いにも答えました。しかし、ザカリヤは天使が言ったことを信じることができませんでした。
Zechariah asked the angel,
するとザカリヤは御使に言いました、
Because of his unbelief, God caused him not to be able to speak until the birth of his son, John (v.20).
このように、ザカリヤが自分の子を持つ事に対して、信仰を強く持って神を信じなかったので、彼の息子であるヨハネが誕生するまで、神はザカリヤが話すことができないようにしたのでした。
Unbelief is a danger to anyone – priest or not; pastor or parishioner. When we pray, we must be ready to receive God’s answer!
このことを、私たちの人生に当てはめてみましょう。不信仰は誰にとっても危険です。司祭であろうとなかろうと、牧師または教会で分けられた地域の民、教区民であろうとなかろうと、不信仰は危険なことです。神に祈るときは、私たちは、神のどんな答えも受ける用意ができていなければなりません！

John’s life mission
ヨハネの人生の使命
The angel’s message gives us an insight into John’s extraordinary calling and mission in life.
この天使ガブリエルのメッセージは、ヨハネの人生における、並外れた召しと使命について教えてくれています。
John the Baptist’s mission has its roots in the Old Testament. For thousands of years, God’s servants had proclaimed the same message again and again: “God will come; His deliverance will come.”
バプテスマのヨハネの使命は、旧約聖書にそのルーツがあります。何千年もの間、神の僕である預言者達は、何度も何度も同じメッセージを次のように言い続けていました。「主は来られる。神は解放してくださる。」と伝えていました。
And now, it’s John’s turn. His message is more powerful and meaningful for he would say, “God is here!”
そして、それを伝えるヨハネの番が来ました。彼のメッセージはより強力で、「神はここにいる！」と言う強いメッセージを伝えました。

John’s growth and development
ヨハネの成長と発達
John’s father, Zechariah, was only able to regain his speech after relinquishing his prerogative to determine the boy’s future. When God loosed Zechariah’s tongue, months of pent-up zeal poured out in praise to the Lord (verses 67~79). He named his child, John, as the angel had told him. And, therefore, John belonged to the Lord. Unlike any other person – apart from our Lord Jesus – John was filled with the Holy Spirit from conception to birth. And as he grew, the Spirit drew him to the wilderness, where he stayed until his 30’s.
ヨハネの父親であるザカリヤは、ヨハネが生まれて、やっと話すことができるようになりましたが、神に従い、自分の息子の将来を決めると言う親としての権利を放棄しなければなりませんでした。神がザカリヤの舌を話せるようにすると、彼は、何ヶ月もの今まで溜まっていた神への熱意を主にほめたたえたのでした。（67〜79節）。ザカリアは天使が彼に言った通りに、息子をヨハネと名付けました。すなわち、ヨハネは主の子どもとなったのです。主イエスは別として、ヨハネは他の人々とは違って、受胎から誕生まで聖霊に満たされていたのです。そして彼が成長するにつれて、聖霊は彼を荒野に引き寄せ、ヨハネは30代まで荒野にとどまりました。
John’s solitary life in the desert seems eccentric to us, even crazy maybe. But, in his world, his camel-hair clothes with matching leather belt and his exotic food were recognized as characteristics of a holy man.
ヨハネの荒野での孤独な生活は、私たちにとっては、奇妙で、狂気にさえ思えます。しかし、その荒野の生活の中で、彼はラクダの毛で作った衣服と革のベルトを身につけ、変わった食べ物を食しました。そのようなヨハネの生活は聖人の特徴として認識されるようになりました。
Do you remember that John came in the “spirit and power of Elijah”(v.17), which was evidenced not only by his ministry but also by his lifestyle (see 2 Kings 1:8)? John lived as a Nazarite (Numbers 6:1~21), one who was consecrated and separated to the service of God.
ヨハネが「エリヤの霊と力」（17節）を持って生まれたことを覚えていますか。この「エリヤの霊と力」はヨハネの宣教活動だけでなく、彼の人生を通してみることができます。ヨハネはナザレ人（民数記6：1〜21）として生き、神の奉仕のために全てを捧げました。
In the wilderness, John’s greatness emerged. God used him as the voice in the desert to prick the conscience of the entire nation. All eyes were trained on him as he humbly proclaimed the coming of the great King, “the Lamb who takes away the sins of the world.”
荒野での生活を通して、ヨハネの偉大さを知ることが出来ます。神はヨハネを砂漠の声として使い、国民の良心に語りかけました。ヨハネは、「世の罪を取り除く神の小羊」と言い表される偉大な王の到来を人々に伝えました。人々はヨハネに注目しました。

Learning from John’s life
ヨハネの人生から学ぶ
We’re not John the Baptist that’s for sure! Unlike him, no angels appeared to announce our birth, nor were there prophecies about our future role in His plan. Nevertheless, we can pick up some valuable lessons about greatness when we reflect on John’s story.
私たちは確かにバプテスマのヨハネではありません。彼のようにはなれません。私たちが生まれた時に天使は現れませんでしたし、ヨハネの人生に計画されていたように、将来の役割についての予言もありませんでした。それでも、ヨハネの話を振り返ると、どうすれば私たちも偉大になれるのかと言う貴重な教訓を得ることができます。

It’s in the worst of times that God raises His extraordinary servants to appear.
悪い時代だからこそ、神は驚くような使いをもたらされる
John’s prophetic ministry required a man of impeccable character; someone who understands the times and yet unpolluted by them. Our contemporary world is no different from John’s world. As then and now, there’s moral depravity, injustice, prejudice and apathy. Our Christian sensitivities cry for men and women, who like John in character and moral convictions, will join the ranks of those who seek first God’s kingdom and His righteousness.
ヨハネが預言者としての宣教活動するためには、非の打ちどころのない人格であることが必要でした。いかに悪い時代であっても、その悪影響を受けていない人物である必要がありました。私たちが生きている現代の世界は、当時のヨハネの世界となんら変わりはありません。当時も今も、道徳的な堕落、不正、偏見、無関心があります。私たちクリスチャンは、性格や道徳的信念においてヨハネのようになりたいと思い、神の王国と神の義をまず第一に求める人々になりたいと心から願っているのです。

There’s no better training for depth of character than obscurity, loneliness, and solitude.
より深い性格形成のためには、何もないところで、孤独、孤立感を味わうことが一番です
God’s laboratory is in the wilderness. Strong character is forged in the lonely places where the only audience is God Himself. John’s shining moment came when he baptized Jesus, but endless days of obscurity prepared him for that privilege. Similarly, we shouldn’t neglect times of silence and enrichment, for they are the foundation of honor.
神の研究室は荒野にあります。唯一の聴衆が神ご自身であるような孤独な場所で、強い性格が鍛えられます。ヨハネの輝かしい瞬間は、イエスにバプテスマを授けたときでした。しかし、荒野でひっそりと過ごした日々があったからこそ、そのような特権を得ることが出来たのです。このヨハネの荒野の時代のように、静けさと豊かさのどちらの時代も無視するべきではありません。それらは名誉の基盤を作り上げていくからです。

One of the most, if not the most, important quality of Christ’s representative is a willingness to be outshone.
キリストを代表する（最も重要ではないにしても、）重要な特質の1つは、より光り輝こうとすることです。
Just as the sun’s brightness eclipses the glow of the morning star, so should Christ’s glory outshine our own. To clear the way and prepare the way as John did is difficult, but the real challenge is to get out of the way. May we grow in humility and may the light of Christ spread through us. May He continually build in us the qualities of greatness!
太陽の明るさが明け方の星の輝きをさえぎるのと同じように、キリストの栄光も私たちの上に輝いているはずです。ヨハネがしたように道を開き、道を整えることは困難ですが、実は、本当の課題は道から抜け出すことです。私たちがへりくだった姿勢で成長し、キリストの光が私たちを通して広がりますように。神が絶えず、偉大なる性質を私達のうちに築いてくださいますように。
