As we work our way through the books of the Bible, you would have heard me say that every book of the Old Testament points to Jesus. And it’s true! Every book, whether it specifically mentions Jesus or not, refers to Him, through analogies, symbols, prophecies, people and events.

Which of the following are examples of this?

Each of these (correct ones) points to Jesus.

Today we look especially at the snake on the pole. We read about this in our Numbers reading today. The key verse was this (v9):
今日我々は特に「青銅のへび」の箇所を見ていきましょう。この箇所は、旧約聖書の「民数記」という書で、今日はこのに「青銅のへび」ついて読んでいます。

John explains in his gospel, which we also read today, how the snake on the pole is one of the symbols from the Old Testament that points to Christ. He explains that:
今日私たちが読んでいる福音書の中でヨハネは、「青銅のヘビ」が旧約聖書のキリストを指す象徴の一つであることを説明しています。
ヨハネはそれを次のように説明します：
During the exodus, God’s people looked to the snake on the pole for healing and help. Later in the Old Testament, God’s people looked to the hills and the stars to see God’s handiwork and to ask for His healing and deliverance. Since New Testament times, God’s people look to His Son for healing and salvation.
出国の間、神の人々は癒しと助けを乞うために「青銅のヘビ」を見ました。後の旧約聖書では、神の人々は、癒しと救出を求めるために、神が作った丘と星に目を向けました。新約聖書の時代から、神の人々は、癒しと救いのために神の御子に目を向ています。
The book of Hebrews begins with this very truth:

Just as the Jews looked, in an inferior way, to the snake on the pole for salvation, so we look, in a superior way, to the Son for our salvation. This isn’t just clever literary symbolism for us to admire. This is a truth to apply in our lives.

In anything that is of importance in our lives, we look to the Son. Remember, the righteous live by faith. We can’t live by faith without looking to the Son in whom we place our faith.
生活の中で重要なことがあれば、私たちは御子に目を向けます。義人は信仰によって生きていることを忘れないでください。私たちが信仰を置く御子を見なければ、信仰によって生きることはできません。
I remember a visiting scholar, a believer, who came to our church many years ago. He was a world renowned scientist in his field and was the author of several books.

I remember when he spoke to our congregation on his last day with us, and said that none of us was exceptionally talented or gifted. None of us could make a lasting difference in this world, in our communities, in our church, relying on our own strength or talents or gifts. We need to look to the Son.

John 3:16-21 goes on to explain, in very familiar terms to us, just who this Son is:

- God’s one and only Son who brings eternal life

I think most of us know verses 16-20 of John 3. That’s one reason why I have focussed on verse 14&15, and now verse 21. Verse 21 says:

This verse talks about the visibility of the believer’s life.

This leads us first to ask, are there any parts of my life, are there any thoughts of my heart, that I would rather not be seen? Are there parts of my life or of my heart that I would not feel comfortable being projected up on this screen for others to see?
これは私たちに最初に尋ねます。私の人生の中で、私の心の思いの中で人に見られたくないことはあるだろうか？私の人生のある部分や私の心の中は、例えば、このスクリーンに映されて、他の人に見られても恥ずかしくないでしょうか？
(I’m not talking about normal private matters like going to the toilet!) I’m talking about issues of shame. That secrecy is the darkness that hates the light. Is there a part of you deep down, that you hide from the light, that you keep in darkness, that you say to God, not that bit, that’s off limits to you?

- A little stash of money that we don’t want to tithe?

I’ve been speaking in negative terms but this teaching about the visibility of the believer’s life is actually a very positive thing.
私は、これまで否定的な言い方で話してきましたが、クリスチャンの「人生の透明性」に関するこの教えは、実際には非常に肯定的なものです。
This is probably a good point to remind you of our new Church Mission statement. Who can remember it?

When we come into the light of Christ and surrender our lives to Him, the natural response is to want to love God, to want to share His love with others and make disciples, to want to extend His love to others and bless all.
私たちがキリストの光に入って私たちの人生を神に委ねるとき、自然に神を愛するようになり、他の人と神の愛を分かち合い、神の弟子となり従い、他人に神の愛を広げ、すべての人々を祝福したくなるとうことなのです。
The Lent message of living by the truth and coming into the light fits very nicely with our church mission statement. Let’s really put it into action this Easter! Let’s make our lives in Christ really visible to the outside world.
真理によって生きて、光に入っていくという受難節のメッセージは、私たちの教会の使命、ミッションステートメントに非常によく合います。このイースターを機会に実際に行動に移しましょう！キリストを中心にした私たちの生活を、教会の外の人たちに本当に目に見えるようにしましょう。
When we come into the light, when we surrender our lives to Christ, we have no secrets, no fears, no doubt. In fact, when we live in the light of Christ, everything we do is in the sight of God, and is seen by others to be godly.
私たちが光に入って、私たちの人生をキリストに委ねるとき、私たちは秘密も恐れもなく、疑いもなくなります。実際に、私たちがキリストの光の中にいるときは、私たちがすることはすべて神の目を通され、私たちの人生を通して他の人々に神が見えるようになります。
We want the world to look into our lives. We want them to see how we are living, even when we think no-one is looking, because we are living good, godly lives that testify about the light of Christ.
世界の人々に私たちの人生を見て欲しいと思います。誰も見ていないと思っていても、私たちがどのように生きているのかを人々に見てもらいたいと思うのは、私たちがキリストの光について証ができるほどの、良い敬虔な人生を生きているからです。

Some people are worried about others looking through their internet viewing history, looking through the files on their computer, reading the emails they have received or sent.
インターネットでの視聴履歴を見られたらどうしよう、自分のコンピュータ上のファイルを見られたらそうしよう、自分が受信した、または送信した電子メールを他人に読まれたらどうしようと、心配している人がいます。
I don’t! I hope people do look! (With the exception of some confidential mails which as pastor I have received from some of you – they’re safe!) But if people look through my computer, all they’ll find is a bunch of sermons and countless clicks on Biblegateway! (And more recently, what to eat when you don’t have a gall bladder, and maybe a couple of rugby videos on Youtube…)
私はそんな心配はしません！私は人々に、むしろ見て欲しいと願っています！ でも、私は牧師として、みなさんから受け取った秘密のメールについては公開することは絶対ありませんから安心してください。人々が私のコンピューターを見たら、無数の説教と無数の聖書の資料を見つけることでしょう。 最近では、胆嚢に良い食べ物の資料やYoutubeのラグビーのビデオをいくつか…と言った具合だと思います。
In some ways,I want my computer to be a microcosm of my life. I want to live a life that anyone can look in at any time (if they want) and see God. Who else feels this way?
ある意味、誰がいつどこで見てもいいように、私のコンピューターが私の人生を象徴してくれたらいいなと思っています。私は、いつ誰が見ても神が見えるような人生を生きたいと思っています。他に誰がこのように感じているでしょうか？
I want to live a life that shows plainly that what I have done has been done in the sight of God. Who else feels this way?
私のしてきたことが神にあってなされたと、はっきりと分かる人生を生きたいと思っています。他に誰がこのように感じているでしょうか？
I want to experience the peace and joy that comes from living visibly in the light and I want people to see that. Who else feels this way?
光のうちに生きていることが目に見えて分かることから来る平安と喜びを経験し、人にそれを見てもらいたいと思っています。他に誰がこのように感じているでしょうか？
A friend of mine said that when he dies, he doesn’t want people to look back and say, “Wasn’t he a good man!?” He wants people to look back on his life and say, “Isn’t God good?” When we live in the light of Christ, it’s all about visibly living for God. And that is a beautiful thing.
私のある友人は、彼が死んだ時、人々に振り返ってもらって 「彼はいい人でしたよね！」と言われるより、人々が彼の人生を振り返って、「神は素晴らしいね！」と言って欲しいと言いました。 私たちがキリストの光の中にいる時、それはすべて目に見える形で神のために生きることです。それは美しいことです。
Let’s spend some time in prayer now, handing over every area of our lives to God, asking for forgiveness, asking to be cleansed, asking for a fresh filling of His Spirit, asking for a fresh zeal, asking for a fresh vision in Christ, asking for a fresh strength to fulfill the vision that Christ has given us, asking for our lives to be filled with a fresh joy that can only come from having the fulness of Christ reside visibly in us.
私たちの人生のすべてを神に委ね、許しを求め、清められるよう望み、新たな御霊の満たしを求めて、新たな熱意を求めて、キリストの新しい展望を求めて、キリストが私たちに与えた展望を実現するための新たな力を求め、キリストが私たちの人生の中に目に見えるように、そして私たちの人生がキリストの存在による新しい喜びで満たされるように求めましょう。
赦し 清められる 聖霊に新たに満たされる 新たな熱意 新たなビジョン 新たな力 新たな喜び
